Violent crime reports rose in America for the first time in 2006, according to FBI statistics. However, the recent 1.2% increase belies a long-term trend: America is becoming a much safer country. To find out which parts of America are the safest, we looked at the FBI's latest report on crime and found cities with violent crime rates substantially below the national average. Virtually no location in the U.S. is 100% safe from dangerous weather. According to the National Weather Service, the combination of flooding, lightning, tornadoes, tropical cyclones, snow/ice storms, extreme heat, extreme cold, high winds, and rip currents claims almost 600 lives each year in the U.S., on average. Of course, catastrophic events in any year (Hurricane Katrina, spring 2011 tornadoes) can skew the averages. However, there are locations in the U.S. where the weather is generally "safer."

-- Immigration authorities raided the offices of a Southern California fencing company Wednesday, seizing boxes of documents and arresting 17 employees who are believed to be in the United States illegally. Golden State Fence Co. had rehired some of the 17 employees who were arrested despite previous warnings by federal authorities that they were ineligible to work, officials with the Department of Homeland Security's Immigration and Customs Enforcement bureau said in a press release. Authorities searched company offices in Riverside, where the company is based, and in Oceanside, about 35 miles north of San Diego. All 17 employees arrested were...
