NEW YORK (AP) — A state lawmaker pleaded guilty Friday to federal charges in a deal that requires her to resign from office, admitting that she obtained legal residency and ultimately citizenship through a sham marriage and then lied to bankruptcy authorities years later to erase $30,000 of debt. Assemblywoman Gabriela Rosa, 47, told U.S. District Judge Denise Cote that she "falsely got married" to a U.S. citizen and referred to it as a real marriage when she became a citizen in 2005. **SNIP** Although the two false statements charges carry a combined potential penalty of 10 years in prison,...

U.S. Rep Rosa DeLauro is a powerful and influential woman... DeLauro has been the co-chair of the House Democratic Steering Committee since 2003, where she makes committee assignments. This position gives Rep. DeLauro the power to determine the make up of powerful House Committees, to stack them with those Congressmen she deems most appropriate. She is also a member of the far left Congressional Progressive Caucus , which may help to explain why that organization is so well represented on several powerful House Committees. Family Members Object to Rosa Parks' Will Tuesday May 2, 2006 3:01 AM DETROIT (AP) - A dozen nieces and nephews of civil rights icon Rosa Parks have filed an objection to her will in hopes of gaining control of the use of her name and image. The family members, who have been feuding for years with the people Parks appointed to handle her affairs, filed the legal challenge Friday. ``We still are very open to talk settlement in this case, if for no other reason than both sides have a deep respect for Ms. Parks,'' Frederick Toca Jr., an...

Just like the 1938 melodrama “Prison Nurse,” passions boiled over behind bars for real-life slammer medic Sandra Rosa when she became fevered for a caddish con she met inside the Middleton jail. But Rosa’s romance did not have a happy ending. By the time the 25-year-old LPN unchained her heart from Felix “Flex” Melendez - a violent felon she bailed out so they could be together - Rosa had lost her job and been bloodied and robbed by her dream man. “No comment,” Rosa said yesterday outside her home in Lowell, her lip no longer swollen from where Melendez’ fist...

East Pacific Hurricane Rosa makes landfall on the west coast of Mexico on October 14, 1994 as a Category 2 hurricane with 100 mph winds. Then it moves over the mountains and weakens. However, its moisture remains and heads towards Texas. A strong cold front over Texas and high pressure system over Canada cause the remnant of Hurricane Rosa to stall over Texas. Rain starts to fall on October 15th. Many areas got 1 to 2 inches of rain. Then it rains again on the 16th. Later that night and well into the early morning hours of the 17th, heavy...

Rosa Brooks: The happiness gap IT'S BEEN A rough couple of weeks. Hamas won the Palestinian elections; protests over cartoons representing the prophet Muhammad raged around the world; more Americans and Iraqis were killed by suicide bombers; new Abu Ghraib photos were released; and, here at home, the vice president got violent. But despite the trying times, we Americans are managing to keep our spirits up. This week, the Pew Research Center released a report on happiness in the United States. Of the Americans surveyed, 34% informed researchers that they were "very happy," while another 50% reported that they were...

Briton sits out racism tribute By Harry Mount in New York (Filed: 03/12/2005) A British woman has outraged New Yorkers by refusing to give up a bus seat set aside to honour the civil rights pioneer Rosa Parks. Fiona Humphreys, 55, from Bristol, was told she was sitting in a symbolic seat kept empty in honour of the 50th anniversary of the day Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white man in Alabama. Mrs Parks's refusal to budge on Dec 1, 1955, helped spark the civil rights movement in America. But Mrs Humphreys, travelling up Fifth...

At least that's the word I got from the friend of someone who knows someone in the WH who knows. Okay, I realize this is not a great source -- so please go easy -- but it does sound plausible and a great way for the White House to honor Rosa Parks, an authentic african-american heroine, by nominating Janice Rogers Brown as the first african-american woman to the Supreme Court.

The celebration of Rosa Parks's extraordinary contribution to America presents an excellent opportunity for me to summon all the strength at my command so that I may shout at the top of my lungs: "Thank God Almighty for liberal judicial activism." I suppose this makes me a heretic in a town where radical right dogma reigns supreme, especially after the trashing of White House counsel and now-withdrawn Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers. But I'll still pay tribute to activist judges. After all, it was a default by elected leaders that led an "activist" Supreme Court to decide in 1956 that...

Citadel Selects Air Force Academy Superintendent as New PresidentBy Robert Weller Associated Press Writer Published: Jun 19, 2005 DENVER (AP) - Air Force Academy Superintendent Lt. Gen. John Rosa, who took over the school following a sex assault scandal and acknowledged problems of religious intolerance, is leaving to become president of his alma mater, The Citadel. Rosa, a 1973 Citadel graduate, will replace John Grinalds, who leaves Aug. 1 after eight years running the state military college in Charleston, S.C., to become headmaster at a private prep school there. Rosa, 53, became superintendent at the Air Force Academy in 2003...

<p>IT'S FUNNY that, in a city that prides itself on its nonconformity, so many people make the exact same argument exactly the same way. To wit, after I write that Mayor Gavin Newsom was wrong to flout state law by authorizing same-sex marriages, a legion of readers write comparing gay and lesbian newlyweds with civil-rights legend Rosa Parks. To say that Newsom should have more respect for the law, they argue, is like saying Rosa Parks should not have engaged in her landmark act of "civil disobedience."</p>

"Sub Rosa Vepres" Posted by Doc Farmer Saturday, June 28, 2003 We’re all familiar with the Latin phrase ''Sub Rosa'' (under the rose) which stands for something secret or hidden. Well, now I believe we should add a new phrase to the lexicon: ''Sub Rosa Vepres,'' or under the rose bush. Thanks to our friendly neighbourhood Iraqi Nuclear Weapons Developers, that is. Yes, you’ve read by now that one of these scientists under Saddam Hussein’s employ (see also: death threat) was ordered to hide critical atomic weapons development equipment in his back yard, under (of all things) a rose bush....

<p>It began with a plan to drain Pensacola Bay, and ended with a hurricane. In between was 30 years of struggle to colonize Santa Rosa Island.</p>
<p>Today the site lies peacefully under a blanket of white sand. Low-lying dunes and typical barrier island vegetation give no hint at what's underneath, and the sound of waves crashing on the Gulf of Mexico shoreline is easily heard. But about two feet down lie what should be extremely well-preserved remains of the third Spanish settlement in Pensacola.</p>
