STUTTGART, Germany -- When Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld wanted to shake up America's armed forces in Europe, he called in a Marine. Rumsfeld was assembling a team of commanding officers to carry out his plans for a military overhaul last year, and asked General James L. Jones, then commandant of the Marine Corps, to draw up a list of candidates for several top posts. Jones, who had been planning to retire in June, dutifully presented his recommendations and figured that was that. Rumsfeld then stunned him by asking whether he wanted one of the top jobs himself: commander of...

Apple has not offered a live streaming feed for their Macworld Keynote addresses for a number of years. One reader forwarded an email from Apple's Investor Relations which confirms that Apple will again not be providing a live feed for Macworld. Thank you for your email. A replay will be available on http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mac.html, but there are no plans for live streaming. Macworld San Francisco kicks off next week. Steve Jobs is scheduled to provide the keynote address at 9 AM Pacific on January 10th, 2006. MacRumors, of course, will provide live coverage if at all possible. If you will be...

Here’s a sign of how much Apple-flavored Kool-Aid I’ve consumed: as we approached the store I noted the jam-packed parking lot and thought gee, I hope they’re not all here for the new operating system — what if they’ve run out? (It was seven PM, one hour after they’d opened the...

A 21-member delegation represented the US and ARRL at the Amateur Radio Direction Finding 12th World Championship in the Czech Republic September 7-12. ARRL ARDF Coordinator Joe Moell, K0OV, says this year's global competition attracted 327 competitors from 28 countries to the town of Brno--some 110 miles southeast of Prague. ARDF is sometimes called foxtailing or radio orienteering, and world championships take place in even-numbered years. Charles Scharlau, NZ0I, finishes the 80-meter course. "Yes, that is duct tape holding my head together," he said. "The look of pain probably came from seeing my time displayed ahead of me as I...
