Protests are proliferating around Canada in a way that Justin Trudeau and his Cabinet never expected. In fact, none of the political class had any idea that that they were coming. Everyone was totally taken by surprises; for the federal government, taken aback, it got worse. The Cabinet Ministers were disoriented, not believing what they were seeing and likely expecting that it would go away. But it didn't. Turning to their leader, who overnight became proverbially beleaguered, they could not come up with any solution that might save them from humiliation.

Who knew that GoFundMe operates as the woke court of cancellation culture? As an utterly self-nominated moral clearing house? ... The intrusion of the tech monarchs into the politics of our democracies is grim and dangerous.... [The Protest] started around mandates and triple vaccines as they affected a single industry, but it is now so much more. It is among other things, a contest over civil rights; the guttering of the Charter; about Canadian politics as seen from the metropolises of central Canada versus the view from the always less regarded concerns and sensibilities of rural and Western Canada. Also,...

[Premier Kenney] promised “a firm date to end the REP and do it in the very near future.” That still won’t please the large and impatient anti-passport crew in his caucus. They’ve reached peak anger over the program and want it to vanish immediately, especially with more demonstrations and blockades threatening over the weekend.... During an earlier virtual caucus meeting on Monday, MLAs were asked if they agreed with ending the passport requirement at once. Not one person disagreed, according to people who were on the meeting. I won’t name sources because revealing details of caucus meetings is grounds for...

The large town of Ostfildern in the district of Esslingen near Stuttgart in Germany issued a “general decree” on January 26, 2022, according to which peaceful walkers can now also be shot if they take part in protests against the leftwing government's Corona measures. In order to ensure that the ban on assembly in Germany is observed, the use of direct coercion, i.e. physical violence or the use of weapons, have been ordered. After weighing up the conflicting interests, this is “proportionate and necessary” because there are no other means that would discourage potential anti-vaccine participants from walking, the decree states.This...

The U.S. is Canada's largest export buyer for beef and Canada's largest importer supplier. Any disruption to the meat trade between both countries would have severe consequences for meat processors in Canada and consumers in the US. Days after the "Freedom Convoy" of truckers protesting vaccine mandates in Ottawa, the country's capital, protests are spreading to US-Canadian border crossings and furthering logistical headaches. Bloomberg reports 150 trucks packed with beef, bound for the US, are stuck in a traffic jam at the border at Coutts, Alberta, the Canadian Meat Council said. Since the weekend, a convoy of truckers has slowed...

Elon Musk mocked Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau amid this weekend's trucker protest against the Canadian federal government's vaccine mandate, calling Trudeau's administration the real "fringe minority." Replying to a video of Saturday's anti-vaccine protest in Ottawa, Musk tweeted: "It would appear that the so-called 'fringe minority' is actually the government." As the parade of trucks traveled across Canada to the nation's capital last week, Trudeau denounced the Freedom Convoy 2022, calling participants "small fringe minority who are on the way to Ottawa who are holding unacceptable views" at a press conference earlier in the week. Truckers had previously been...

At least 164 people have died in Kazakhstan during violent anti-government protests, according to media reports citing health officials. If confirmed it would mark a sharp rise from the previous figure of 44 deaths. Almost 6,000 people have been arrested, including "a substantial number of foreign nationals", Kazakhstan's presidential office said on Sunday. The demonstrations, triggered by a rise in fuel prices, turned into huge riots as they spread across the country. They started on 2 January and grew to reflect discontent at the government and former President Nursultan Nazarbayev, who led Kazakhstan for three decades and is still thought...

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Pentagon said Thursday it has streamlined the approval process for urgent use of National Guard forces in the District of Columbia, after months of study following the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol. The changes give the defense secretary sole authority to approve requests that would involve D.C. National Guard personnel participating in civil law enforcement or that would require their deployment within 48 hours, Pentagon press secretary John Kirby said in a written statement. That approval authority had previously been delegated to the Army secretary, the service’s top civilian official.... ...Prior to the riot,...

In the past few days, German politicians have declared messaging app Telegram a threat to democracy and a hotbed of radicalization. The latest round of attacks on free communication comes after weeks of protests in Germany against the COVID-19 measures. Protests have been mobilized via Telegram and other online community platforms. Since the beginning of December, the debate about the Telegram app has raged across the German media. Concurrent to the protests news stories – such as from the Tagesschau and Deutsche Welle – framed the platform as a hub for dangerous conspiracies, vaccine misinformation, and the driving force behind...

U.S.—New documents recently uncovered by Smithsonian historians confirmed that the group of pilgrims and Indians who gathered for the first Thanksgiving argued vehemently about politics throughout the course of the meal. The newly discovered journal seems to indicate that just after giving thanks for the meal, one Pilgrim from England drank too much mead and began to rant about “making the colonies great again,” kicking off several hours of hostile glances, passive-aggressive remarks, and flat-out argumentation. “Apparently, Uncle Charles was asked to eat at the kids’ table after a tirade about how real patriots need to support King James I,...

THE SIGHT of 40,000 unvaccinated Austrians marching through their capital, Vienna, in recent days was troubling twice over. The tightly packed opponents of pandemic lockdown measures were at risk of spreading the coronavirus. They also threatened to stir up an already tense political situation. Karl Nehammer, Austria’s interior minister, warned that anti-vaxxers in the Alpine republic are growing ever more radicalised. He called their demonstration “incensed” and “aggressive”. Some protesters were provocative in the extreme, carrying placards likening Alexander Schallenberg, Austria’s new chancellor, to Josef Mengele, the sadistic physician at the Nazi concentration camp in Auschwitz. A few wore Judensterne,...
