The Federal Reserve is again increasing the amount of money it’s providing to banks for overnight borrowing, raising the top level now to $175 billion. In an announcement Wednesday afternoon, the New York Fed said it would boost the top level it provides in overnight operations to at least $175 billion from the $150 billion level it had just set Monday. “Consistent with the FOMC directive to the Desk, these operations are intended to ensure that the supply of reserves remains ample and to mitigate the risk of money market pressures that could adversely affect policy implementation,” the Fed’s statement...

During the 19th century, improvements in various printing technologies, including lithography, chromolithography, and the rotary press, ushered in an era of popular art. Currier & Ives (and others) produced inexpensive prints; L. Prang & Co. (and more) sold Christmas cards; periodicals such as Harper's New Monthly Magazine included drawings by Thomas Nast and others. Because they were mass-produced by the standards of the time, many of these works have survived to the present day, giving us a kind of window on the past -- images of Christmastime in the 1800s.

A Nogales, Sonora, police commander is in the Santa Cruz County jail after immigration authorities matched his fingerprints to a warrant out of California. On April 4 at about 10:30 p.m., U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers detained Jesus Rolando Villanueva Ramos, 45, as he attempted to pass through the Dennis DeConcini Port of Entry in Nogales, Ariz., said Roger Maier, Customs and Border Protection spokesman.
