Republican Governor of South Dakota Kristi Noem has faced criticism from both sides of the political spectrum on Sunday for telling state residents “don’t wait until Monday to celebrate Native American heritage” in an official statement. Noem only referred to October 11 as Native Americans’ Day, and omitted any reference to the date’s long national significance as Columbus Day.“The second Monday in October has been recognized as a federal holiday since 1968. In 1990, South Dakota was the first state to do things a little differently than the rest of the nation,” Noem said. “In South Dakota, we recognize Monday,...

Actor Edward Norton has slammed President Donald Trump's longshot legal challenges to contest the election results, accusing him of sowing chaos in an attempt to avoid legal peril. In a series of tweets on Friday, the 51-year-old Fight Club actor used a lengthy poker metaphor to accuse Trump of 'bluffing' in his legal maneuvers, urging the country to 'call his bluff.' 'I'm no political pundit but I grew up w a dad who was a federal prosecutor & he taught me a lot & I've also sat a fair amount of poker w serious players & l'll say this: I...

Pope Francis returned to one of his favorite topics this week, preaching against Christians who are “rigid” and resistant to change. In his homily at morning Mass at his Santa Marta residence in the Vatican on Tuesday, the pope compared modern Christians hung up on doctrine, morals, or the liturgy with the “hypocritical” Pharisees and doctors of the law of Jesus’ time People followed Jesus because he was “attractive, touched hearts, made himself loved,” Francis said, unlike the Pharisees who scrutinized everything “under a magnifying glass.” *snip* The pope, in fact, gave a series of homilies sharply criticizing those who...

Donald Trump's victory in Indiana came down quick as a guillotine—but even before the election results rolled in, the GOP faithful were jumping ship. Former John McCain aide Mark Salter declared his allegiance to Hillary Clinton earlier today. the GOP is going to nominate for President a guy who reads the National Enquirer and thinks it's on the level. I'm with her. — Mark Salter (@MarkSalter55) May 3, 2016 RedState blogger Ben Howe, who's promised to phone bank for Clinton if Trump gets the nomination, followed suit. #ImWithHer — Ben Howe (@BenHowe) May 3, 2016 Once it became clear that...

Talk-radio host Michael Savage, a strong supporter of Donald Trump’s campaign for president, took issue with the Republican front-runner’s opposition to North Carolina’s bathroom law, which requires people to use gender-specific public facilities according to their biological sex. “Trump is 100 percent wrong. Cruz supports the North Carolina measure, as I have and as I do,” Savage told his listeners. Savage said Trump’s supporters need to acknowledge the candidate made a mistake. “People do make mistakes,” he said. “I agree with Ted Cruz on this issue.”

The U.S. military carried out a missile strike in Somalia on Sunday, targeting a suspected militant leader with links to the al-Qaeda and al-Shabaab terror groups, U.S. military officials told NBC News. U.S. military and intelligence officials are reviewing bomb damage assessment to determine if the terror leader was killed or wounded in the strike. The officials would not yet identify the target of the strike. The al-Shabaab group — which the State Department designates as a terrorist organization — is a loosely affiliated band of militia insurgents in southern Somalia that has close ties to the al-Qaeda terror network.

Sen. John McCain defended the Tea Party against Sen. John Kerry’s “tea party downgrade” remark on Meet the Press this morning. “We could have reached an agreement a lot earlier, but the members of the House of Representatives had a mandate last November, and it was jobs and the economy and it was spending. And for them to then agree to tax increases and spending increases was obviously a repudiation of the mandate they felt they had from last November,” McCain said. He said that much of the “dysfunction” in the current political system could be attributed to “the failure...

I try to ignore the birther movement unless it inducts someone important -- a congressman, for example. The (sigh) American Patriot Foundation's announcement that Lt. Gen. Thomas McInerney (ret.) has signed an affidavit supporting court martialed birther Lt. Col. Terry Lakin is actually a pretty big coup. How wild is McInerney's statement? This wild: [I]t is my opinion that LTC Lakin's request for discovery relating to the President's birth records in Hawaii is absolutely essential to determining not merely his guilt or innocence but to reassuring all military personnel once and for all for this President whether his service as...

The Pentagon said it was never notified by U.S. intelligence agencies that they had intercepted emails between the alleged Fort Hood shooter and an extremist imam until after last week's bloody assaults, raising new questions about whether the government could have helped prevent the attack.A top defense official said federal investigators didn't tell the Pentagon they were looking into months of contacts between Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan and Anwar al-Awlaki. The imam knew three of the Sept. 11 hijackers and hailed Maj. Hasan as a "hero" after the shooting last week at Fort Hood that left 13 people dead. "Based...
