An Israeli museum on Thursday unveiled what it says in the oldest known Jewish prayer book in the world, dating back to the 9th century A.D. The prayer book, about 10 centimeters (four inches) long and seven centimeters wide, is written in Hebrew, contains about 50 pages, and is still in its original binding. It was donated to the Bible Lands Museum in Jerusalem by Oklahoma businessman Steve Green, a devout Christian and owner of one of the largest collections of rare biblical artifacts in the world. Green’s family controls the Hobby Lobby crafts store chain, which won a closely-watched...

It is growing increasingly difficult to find a congregation offering an Independence Day liturgy on July 4. Here are the propers from the 1979 Prayer Book:Collect of the Day Lord God Almighty, in whose Name the founders of this country won liberty for themselves and for us, and lit the torch of freedom for nations then unborn: Grant that we and all the people of this land may have grace to maintain our liberties in righteousness and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen....

At 8 a.m. on Sunday morning The Order for Holy Communion from The Book of Common Prayer (1662) is used in Christ Church Cathedral, Port Stanley, Falkland Isles. It is used again for Evensong in the evening. Christ Church has a massive parish - all the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and the British Antarctic Territories. The Cathedral status is based upon the fact that here was the seat, cathedra, of the Bishop of the Falkland Islands, whose diocese also covered the south of South America. Today, there are Anglican Bishops of the Province of the Southern Cone in the south...

You may remember that when I visited Canterbury Cathedral, I was repelled by the liturgy there – Advent collects omitted, the Lord’s Prayer so tampered with I couldn’t recite it even while looking at the words in front of me, and more. Well, as noted over on titusonenine, I’m not the only one appalled by the state of the liturgy in England. I unfortunately missed it while I was there, but the Telegraph ran a column denouncing the Church of England’s wholesale tossing of the Book of Common Prayer. May I remind the reader that the 1662 BCP is still...

And also the biography of Pope Benedict XVI; the testimony of Mother Teresa with the homily as well as introductory speech of John Paul II on her beatification; biographies and photos of 15 Indian candidates for Canonization, including Mother Teresa; the list of all 265 Popes etc. There is a book for testimony to add of those who are experiencing miracles by the intercession of John Paul II. Also to post the memories of...
  • "We know you have a choice--but do come to our church!": Choice, Diversity, Variety

A discussion starter One can claim that since the seventeenth century and certainly from the eighteenth century in English-speaking countries, there has been freedom of religion and thus CHOICE for worshippers as to place of worship -- e.g., parish church or nonconformist chapel in England with similar choice in other lands. Further, one can claim that until the mid to late twentieth century it was generally true that one was fairly certain what to expect inside a place of worship, if one knew to whom it belonged. What went on, in terms of forms of worship, inside a Baptist or...
  • Question: 'George Washington prayer book'

Perhaps some of you can help me find the truth here. There are many prayers attributed to George Washington, and the source of all of them seems to be a book found many years after Washington's death. Here, Franklin Steiner claims that the book is a fraudulent document, in this excerpt from his book, The Religious Beliefs of our Presidents: From Washington to FDR: Link to this article Washington must have been "powerful in prayer" if we are to believe two other stories told of his attempts to reach the "throne of grace." Some 30 years ago it was proclaimed...
