Bioterrorism threat said real Oct 17, 2002 12:00 PM, Harry Cline There are 7,000 unaccounted for former Soviet Union biological warfare scientists and technicians in the world today. Before 9/11/01, that fact would be filed away under "So what...just left over Cold War paranoia." Now, though, that fact is cause for considerable concern to Americans, and a panel of experts on bioterrorism and radical environmental groups speaking at the recent California Plant Health Association and CropLife America joint annual convention in Palm Desert, Calif., only served to heighten that concern when they addressed biological warfare issues facing America today. According...

More than 27,000 chickens were boiled alive in a ventilation system malfunction, described by a judge as ‘a disaster’. Leicester Magistrates’ Court heard there were 50,000 chickens at Hose Lodge Farm in Colston Bassett when the systems that regulated air flow failed. As the temperature in the large barn rose rapidly, more than half of the animals died, while the ones that survived still suffered dramatically. Workers at the Mountaire Farms poultry plant in rural Robeson County, North Carolina, say that about four months ago, something changed. At the time, they couldn’t immediately identify the strange new chemical they’d begun to smell floating around the production lines. But one day things were running as expected, and the next there was a sharp, suffocating kind of odor that one worker said felt like it “invaded your brain.” “It stings your eyes and throat; it’s like a burning in your nasal cavity,” said Sharon, an immigrant who has worked at Mountaire’s Lumber Bridge plant for more than a...

You can delay raw chicken from spoiling by cooking it, but cooked chicken also has a limited shelf life. Before you bite into that plate of leftovers, check over the chicken carefully to make sure it is still good. Chicken can be bad but have no signs. Throw it out if you notice any of the common signs of bad cooked chicken to avoid food poisoning. Time Is Not On Your Side Cooked chicken must be refrigerated within an hour after cooking so bacteria doesn't begin to multiply. The meat is only good for two to three days after refrigeration,...

Obesity is a major problem in Britain OBESITY can be “caught” as easily as a common cold from other people’s coughs, sneezes and dirty hands, scientists will claim today. As many as one in three obese people may have become overweight after falling victim to the highly infectious cold-like virus, known as AD-36. It is known to cause coughs, sore throats, diarrhoea and conjunctivitis but has now also been found to make fat cells multiply, leading to weight gain....

It’s not like we weren’t warned. The doomsayers predicted this months ago: “A MASSIVE CHICKEN WING SHORTAGE IS BREWING,” blared the headline of one trade publication in early February. But it turned out to be so much worse. Bloomberg News, on Thursday: “Fried-Chicken Craze Is Causing U.S. to Run Low on Poultry.” In other words, not just wings, but chicken in general. Or, as Bojangles put it in a recent tweet about their tenders: “we’re experiencing a system-wide shortage :( But they will be back soon!”

Russia has warned today that mutating H5N8 Bird Flu has a high risk of human-to-human transmission. The alert appears to contradict the low threat position of the World Health Organisation. This comes almost a month after scientists detected the first case of H5N8 transmission to humans at a poultry farm in southern Russia. The Kremlin’s health watchdog chief Anna Popova said there was “a rather high probability” of transmission between humans. “It is likely to happen,” she told TASS. “Colleagues say that the mutation is continuing very actively.” But she said that scientists had spotted the threat “before a disaster...
