A HAZMAT team responded to Harvill and Old Oleander avenues after a large plume from railcar was reported just before 7:45 p.m. Thursday, Cal Fire Division Chief John Crater said during a news conference Friday morning. Wind gusts helped spread the initial plume until it covered a two-mile area over the city of Perris, Crater said. The leaking chemical in the railcar tank was identified to be styrene, which is used to make foam products for commercial purposes. Crater consulted with experts who told him that heat building in the railcar could still cause a release. “Meaning some sort of...

Homeschooling advocates are concerned about additional regulations after news of abuse from homeschooling parents in California. The Massachusetts-based Coalition for Responsible Home Education, a nonprofit group that is actively advocating for homeschooling reform, says a lack of oversight for homeschools allows abuse, such at the recent case in Perris, California, to go unchecked and is now calling for increased regulation of homeschools. Pentecostal Christian couple David Allen Turpin, 57, and his 49-year-old wife, Louise Anna Turpin, were arrested on Jan. 14, after police had to rescue their 13 severely malnourished children from their home in Perris, California. The home was...

PERRIS, Calif. – Two Southern California parents are being held on $9 million bail each after a horrific discovery at a residence in Perris over the weekend, the Riverside County Sheriff's Department said Monday. An investigation began after a 17-year-old girl "escaped" from her home in the 100 block of Muir Woods Road and called 911 early Sunday morning to report that her 12 brothers and sister were being held captive by their parents, according to a sheriff's news release. She alleged some of her siblings were bound in padlocked chains. Her call prompted a response from Perris Police Department...

Police in California discovered a horrifying scene of 12 siblings “shackled to their beds with chains and padlocks” inside their California home after a 13th kid escaped and called 911. The siblings — ranging in age from 2 to 29 — were allegedly being held captive in putrid conditions by their parents in a home in Perris, Calif., about 30 miles south of San Bernardino, according to KABC-TV. The discovery was made after a 17-year-old girl escaped from the hell house on Sunday Morning and called cops on a cell phone she managed to sneak out with her. Police soon...
