Haim Ben-Zino, the uncle of 15-year-old Tehila Ben-Zino, who was critically wounded last Thursday by an iron bar that hit her head near a construction site in Jerusalem's Geulah neighborhood, is convinced that the interrogation was conducted superficially. He told Arutz Sheva that school leaders have complained about Arab workers harassing and throwing things at girls from Tehila's school and other schools. He said they laughed during the incident, indicating it was nationalistic in nature. He also called for prayers on behalf of Tehila bat Yael, who is currently under sedation on a respirator and can only move the left...

Bill Kochevar grabbed a mug of water, drew it to his lips and drank through the straw. His motions were slow and deliberate, but then Kochevar hadn't moved his right arm or hand for eight years. And it took some practice to reach and grasp just by thinking about it. Kochevar, who was paralyzed below his shoulders in a bicycling accident, is believed to be the first person with quadriplegia in the world to have arm and hand movements restored with the help of two temporarily implanted technologies. A brain-computer interface with recording electrodes under his skull, and a functional...

"The strangest aspect of being paralyzed is that nobody ever, ever asks you what it’s like. This may be from concern over not hurting your feelings. Or not wanting to bring up the issue. Or superstition that your paralysis might be contagious if discussed. It’s still odd that nobody inquires. It’s the elephant—the screaming banshee—in the room, and it’s mighty big..." "...Q: Where do you find an invalid? A: Where you left him. You find yourself, unavoidably, living in the past. Happiness isn’t is, but was. You try not to contemplate the future too much. Nor the future of the...

Sudan's Foreign Ministry said Sunday it had "solid proof" that Israel had carried out a deadly attack on its main port last week, using advanced technology to blind the country's radar system to enter unidentified via a civilian air space course. Two Apache AHA64 helicopters flew in via the Red Sea and attacked the "two Sudanese subjects… reflecting the Israeli desire to kill and liquidate" its targets, the ministry was quoted by the SUNA news agency as saying. The ministry was maintaining its stance that neither of the targets had been involved in the trafficking of weapons from Iran to...

Mountain or molehill? Using a specially designed wheelchair, one enthusiastic dog proved she can tackle either, turning the highest peak in the Northeast into just another day's climb. Lucy, a 4-year old mixed breed, was paralyzed four years ago in a car accident in Puerto Rico. On Wednesday, August 18, she climbed to the top of Mt. Washington, becoming the first paralyzed dog ever to scale the 6,288-foot peak. "I think many people underestimate handicapped pets and don't realize just how much they can do given proper care and training," explained owner Courtney Dunning of Peterborough, New Hampshire. A rapist who was paralyzed from the neck down in a prison stabbing may still be dangerous and can be kept behind bars under a state law that allows the release of some permanently disabled inmates, a state appeals court ruled today. Although Steven Martinez is no longer capable of assaulting anyone, his past crimes and later verbal abuse of prison nurses show he is "an evil, angry and violent person" who might enlist others to commit attacks after release, said the Third District Court of Appeal in Sacramento. "Quadriplegics ... are capable of committing violent crimes," the court said...

As scientists have the first 'conversation' with a patient in a vegetative state, one man's awe-inspiring story'One cannot even begin to imagine the despair, frustration and fear that was Martin Pistorius's life for more than a decade. After contracting meningitis at the age of 12, he found himself locked inside his body and spent 14 years with no form of communication and completely unable to control his body. His parents were told that their only option was to allow him to die and that he had the brain function of a three-month-old baby. That, however, was not the case. While...

HAIFA, Israel (Reuters) - paralyzed for the past 20 years, former Israeli paratrooper Radi Kaiof now walks down the street with a dim mechanical hum. That is the sound of an electronic exoskeleton moving the 41-year-old's legs and propelling him forward -- with a proud expression on his face -- as passersby stare in surprise. "I never dreamed I would walk again. After I was wounded, I forgot what it's like," said Kaiof, who was injured while serving in the Israeli military in 1988.

For more than thirty years, Steve Foster has been living his life partially paralyzed, but he hopes a recent trip to Mexico is going to change that. "I want this...bad," said Foster, an adult stem cell patient. Foster traveled south to undergo the adult stem cell transplant procedure, in an effort to gain back what he once had. "I'm tired of this life, and the way it is now," he said. Julie Hood, a human biology assistant professor at Central Oregon Community College, says although the treatment isn't performed in the U.S., it has been performed successfully in other countries....

Recent successful tests of neural prosthetics bring the devices closer to widespread use. Paralyzed patients dream of the day when they can once again move their limbs. That dream is making its way to becoming a reality, thanks to a neural implant created by John Donoghue and colleagues at Brown University and Cyberkinetics Neurotechnology Systems. In 2004, Matthew Nagle, who is paralyzed due to a spinal-cord injury, became the first person to test the device, which translated his brain activity into action (see "Implanting Hope," March 2005, and "Brain Chips Give Paralyzed Patients New Powers"). Nagle's experience with the prosthetic...
