UPDATE-Sunday the names of victims in this crash were released. They are identified as pilot 68-year-old Mark Peterson of Foley, Alabama and passenger 72-year-old Thomas Volz of Amelia, Ohio. Two people lost their lives when a helicopter and gyrocopter crashed in the air near the Ultralight Runway at EAA AirVenture just before 12:30 Saturday. The collision sent both aircraft to the ground and one landed on a parked plane. The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office tells EAA two more people are hurt, but stable, right now. “Obviously somebody was in the wrong place at some time and that will be part...

In a release, the branch awarded Mack Defense, Navistar Defense, Oshkosh Defense and the American Rheinmetall Vehicles/GM Defense team deals worth a combined total of $24.25 million. The contractors will provide three prototypes of each variant for the Common Tactical Truck (CTT) Family of Vehicles. Each team will build three prototypes of each variant, including the M915 Line Haul Tractor and M1088 Medium Tractor, the Palletized Load System (PLS) and the Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck (HEMTT). The contractors will provide three prototypes of...

OSHKOSH - While an estimated 8,000 planes flew in to the Experimental Aircraft Association's annual AirVenture convention this week in Oshkosh, across the nation it appears that the only infallible way to fly somewhere is to be your own pilot. In 2020, 20% of U.S. pilots were unemployed due to the crash in air travel during the pandemic, according to The 2021 Pilot Survey. Airlines operated 4.7 million domestic passenger flights in the full year 2020, a 41% drop from flights in 2019, according to the Bureau of Transportation. As a result, airlines weren't making enough money to cover their...

The rioters who attacked police officers with Molotov cocktails and fireworks and torched numerous buildings in Kenosha, Wisconsin, for about a week included members of the same pro-China communist group that “sparked” the May riots in Minneapolis after the police-involved killing of George Floyd. Maoist activists from the Freedom Road Socialist Organization (FRSO) can take most, if not all, of the credit for inciting the recent rioting in Kenosha. The town of 100,000 people has been torn apart, businesses and cars have been razed, multiple people have been arrested, and two people have died—yet no one seems to want to...

President Donald Trump hosted a campaign rally in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, the same night the Democratic National Convention was scheduled to kick off in Milwaukee. While Democrats instead opted for a virtual conference to avoid spreading the coronavirus, Trump drew a crowd of at least 1,000 people. In off-the-cuff remarks, Trump suggested to Republicans that if they wanted to win elections, they had to keep cannabis legalization off the ballot. Though the Trump Administration has attacked cannabis reform in behind-closed-doors proceedings and by blocking legislative action, this is the first time the President has made negative comments about cannabis in public....

A persistent fantasy among those of us in aviation—or vintage cars, or motorcycles, or boats—is to find the pristine, never-used object of our passion stored away in a barn somewhere, just awaiting discovery and sale at a cheap price. It does happen from time to time, although the pristine part is a stretch. Tom Reilly may own the mother of all barn finds in the Merlin engine he located for his XP82 Twin Mustang restoration that’s gathering admirers in droves here at AirVenture this week. When I was shooting this video on it, I could hardly believe the story. The...

The U.S. military's new Joint Light Tactical Vehicle suffers from reliability, safety and lethality shortcomings that need fixing before it will be suitable for battlefield use, according to a recent Defense Department test and evaluation report. Army and Marine Corps units will soon start training with the JLTV, a high-performance vehicle designed to replace many of the military's aging Humvees.

Why go with Oshkosh? Think back to 2006-7 and you'll remember that American Army soldiers and Marines were getting clobbered by improvised explosive devices in Iraq. In fact, IEDs accounted for 60 percent of American casualties. The situation was so dire that units were bolting steel plates to their Humvees for protection. That led to the development of heavy Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles, which worked well in Iraq but not in the mountainous terrain of Afghanistan. There, the Pentagon's solution was the lighter M -ATV or MRAP All-Terrain Vehicle built by Oshkosh Defense. ... The L-ATV differs from...

The High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle — the HMMWV, or Humvee — is a stalwart of the battleground. If you asked someone to draw a military truck, they'd almost certainly draw this classic machine, which is almost older than a millennial (1984!) and gained such a pop culture following at one point that civilians started buying them. Arnold Schwarzenegger, in particular, is famous for his undying love of the "Hummer." But seriously, they're old. The US military has been keen on retiring Humvees for some time, and it has finally awarded the $6.7 billion contract to replace them to Wisconsin-based...

When there is a wall of flame and thick billowing smoke at an air show it is sadly the sign of a tragedy. But for spectators at a display in America it was the chance to cheer and remember one of the most important days in their history. As a P-40 Kittyhawk fighter flew low at low level it was the start of a spectacular re-enactment of the attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese Navy in 1941. The skies above Oshkosh in Wisconsin were filled with dueling fighter planes as the aerial battles from the Day of Infamy were...

FAA Administrator Will Not Be Attending The Show FAA Administrator Michael Huerta will not be attending Oshkosh this year. And while he had a previous family engagement made months in advance, it is at the very least unfortunate timing given the ultimatum handed to EAA over air traffic control services for the show.

Bad news will greet Vice President Joe Biden when he arrives in Wisconsin Thursday night. Hours earlier, Oshkosh's largest employer announced that it will lay off 450 employees in January. Oshkosh Corp., a truck manufacturer with Pentagon contracts, blamed the "difficult decisions" on looming cuts to the nation's defense budget. "As Oshkosh and others in the defense industry have discussed on numerous occasions, domestic military vehicle production volumes will decline significantly in 2013 due to the reduction in U.S. defense budgets and the fact that military spending is returning to peacetime levels," the company said in a statement. "Unfortunately, these...

Last week, we heard that State Rep. Gordon Hintz (D-Oshkosh) had been busted in a prostitution sting. State Rep. Gordon Hintz was issued a municipal citation in Appleton earlier this month for violating a city sexual misconduct ordinance. Appleton police said the citation was issued Feb. 10 in conjunction with an ongoing investigation of Heavenly Touch Massage Parlor, 342 W. Wisconsin Ave., in Appleton. Police searched the business and a nearby residence in the 1300 block of North Division Street Jan. 28, after investigators had staked out the properties for several days after receiving a tip. ** Last Friday.... after...

Boeing working on hybrid plane to cut fuel use, noise, emissions OSHKOSH, Wis. — An electric airliner? Imagine a hyper-efficient aircraft as large as a Boeing 737, although weighing much less. It would run quieter and cleaner than any other commercial plane ever made, requiring two-thirds less energy, according to NASA-funded research. The hybrid-powered jetliner of the future would operate on batteries or jet fuel, depending on whether it's cruising or taking off and climbing, when the most thrust is required. The concept of electric aircraft generated a resounding buzz amid the drone of pistons and the roar of gas...

The Boeing B-17 “Flying Fortress,” perhaps the most readily recognized bomber of the World War II era, will be center stage for its 75th anniversary during EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2010, “The World’s Greatest Aviation Celebration,” on July 26-August 1 at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh. Only about 15 of the iconic aircraft remain airworthy anywhere in the world, including EAA’s renowned “Aluminum Overcast,” which brings aviation history to the public through its annual national tours. Potentially, at least four B-17s could be present at Oshkosh as the exact 75th-anniversary date of the B-17’s first flight on July 28, 1935, comes...
