The Tennessee GOP removed a Trump-endorsed candidate from the ballot in the state’s 5th District primary on Tuesday, highlighting a rift between the former president and Republican leaders in the state. The party’s State Executive Committee voted to bar Morgan Ortagus, who served as Donald Trump’s spokeswoman in the State Department, and two other people from competing in the primary, ruling that they failed to meet the definition of “bona fide” Republicans under the party’s bylaws

On Monday, the Tennessee legislature passed a bill that could make a candidate backed by Donald Trump ineligible to run for Congress this year. The legislation would require anyone seeking federal office in Tennessee to have lived in the state and district they wish to represent for at least three years. Morgan Ortagus, the Republican endorsed by Trump running in Tennessee's 5th district, just moved to the state last year. The bill now goes to Republican Governor Bill Lee's desk. Lee's office told Newsweek on Tuesday that they were reviewing the legislation.

Donald Trump's former spokeswoman at the State Department has taken House Intelligence Committee chairman Adam Schiff to task again for his promotion of a dossier used to discredit the former president. Morgan Ortagus was a guest host on The View on Tuesday, and grilled Schiff for his enthusiastic embrace of the discredited document. He dodged her questions, with Ortagus also since taking to Fox News, where she blamed Schiff's enthusiasm for the dossier's widespread coverage in liberal media outlets, and revealed her nerves at getting to confront him on the popular show.

The Trump administration has chosen counterterrorism expert and former Fox News contributor Morgan Ortagus to be the new State Department spokeswoman, three people with knowledge of the decision told NBC News. Ortagus, a Naval Reserve officer, would bring significant experience in national security and foreign policy to the role. She will replace Heather Nauert, a former Fox News anchor who had been announced as President Donald Trump's pick for United Nations ambassador but later withdrew herself from consideration.
