On Monday, the Tennessee legislature passed a bill that could make a candidate backed by Donald Trump ineligible to run for Congress this year.
The legislation would require anyone seeking federal office in Tennessee to have lived in the state and district they wish to represent for at least three years. Morgan Ortagus, the Republican endorsed by Trump running in Tennessee's 5th district, just moved to the state last year.
The bill now goes to Republican Governor Bill Lee's desk. Lee's office told Newsweek on Tuesday that they were reviewing the legislation.

Oh please...when was the last time Pelosi visited her district let alone lived there, what hypocrites
If it were a Democrat candidate, some court would strike it down in a heartbeat.
That will be struck down be a court. But maybe not in good time.
Can you say ex post facto?
“Oh please...when was the last time Pelosi visited her district let alone lived there, what hypocrites”
Do you understand what you just said? We’ve had nothing but trouble in Colorado from NYC and California carpetbaggers.
Same goes for Maxine Waters.
I’m thinking Hillary Clinton and New York
Different states have different requirements as to residency. California does not require representatives to live within their districts (cough, cough Maxine Waters). New York has no problem electing ‘carpetbaggers’ like Hillary Clinton. Other states do have residency requirements. Don’t know about the ex-post facto factor with this Tennessee bill.
I can, but it doesn't apply. Article I requires only that the congressman be a resident of the state where they represent, no time requirements. States can't override that.
I dunno how well it’ll fly passing a law to force a specific person out of a political race.
She was an inhabitant of the state when elected. That's all the Constitution requires.
This would almost certainly be unconstitutional. It's no different than state-legislated term limits for members of Congress.
The U.S. Constitution clearly lays out the eligibility requirements for members of Congress. Interestingly, there's no constitutional requirement for a House member to live in the district he or she represents.
She has already filed as a candidate.
“If the bill is signed, Ortagus could run for the 5th Congressional seat as an independent but not in a primary”
Carpet bagging is trashy. And she has too many grubby CIA fingerprints on her. USAID, Navy reserve, Intelligence connections, Jewish convert like Ivanka, friends of Kushner and Ivanka. Married by Ruth Bader Ginsberg. Didn’t even know the main interstate running through “her” district.
I love Trump, but he confuses women with that Fox News look as being conservative American.
She has as much business being a Tennessee Congressfool as me. Because I passed through Tennessee once.
As is the Trump backed candidate in Tennessee
This seems like one of Trump’s bad endorsements. It happens. He hasn’t been great about picking who to endorse...eg Ben Sasse, Romney, Lindsey Graham, the Turtle, etc.
No, he’s right. Can only be constitutionally applied after 3 years have passed.
