As the Battle of the Atlantic heated up, in 1944, Captain Daniel Gallery had a conference aboard the USS Guadalcanal, an escort carrier operating with Task Group 22.3 off the coast of Africa. Certain of his officers and seamen had watched a German submarine take a long time to sink, a month earlier, after they had disabled it. Looking at each other- slow smiles...and a plan... spread out.
