A prolific Indiana political blogger wrote an ominous post last week predicting a Donald Trump victory in his state — and soon afterward committed suicide, police said. Gary Welsh, a lawyer who managed his Advance Indiana blog since 2005, was found in his Indianapolis apartment around 8 a.m. Sunday with a gunshot wound, according to the Indianapolis Star. Officers found him in a stairwell, dead at the scene, according to a police report.
  • Waste, waste, waste for GOP

Rep. Rick Berg, R-N.D., along with all the state GOP candidates, scream the party slogan: All the Democrats want to do is spend, spend, spend. We all know that when you spend money on your family, you are investing in them. Spending money on North Dakotans is an investment. That is a much more sound practice than the North Dakotan GOP’s activity was at the last legislative session: waste, waste, waste. The GOP wasted around $100,000 of the taxpayers’ money on the University of North Dakota logo issue. Are these the people we want in the Legislature again in 2013?...

Hundreds of Boston police officers swooped down on the Occupy Boston encampment early this morning, arresting protesters and tearing down tents, bringing an end to the 10-week protest against economic inequality, the longest continual Occupy demonstration in the country.

Scrapping Nimrod is a gift horse for the Russians By Con Coughlin Last updated: January 27th, 2011 The commanders of Russia’s Baltic fleet will be rubbing their hands with glee over the government’s decision to scrap the RAF’s £4 billion Nimrod aircraft. As I wrote this morning, for 40 years Nimrod has been central to our attempts to prevent Russia’s fleet of nuclear submarines from penetrating our defences. But without the sophisticated maritime reconnaissance capability that Nimrod provides, we have, in effect, abandoned the North Sea to the Russians. Defence officials insist that our Nato allies in Scandanavia, who also...
  • Britain is guarded... by the French (How's that EU and socialisim stuff working for everyone?)

AXING the RAF's Nimrod spy planes leaves Britain's defences so weak we will have to depend on the FRENCH to stave off a naval attack on us. French Atlantique planes operating from UK bases will monitor and intercept unauthorised ships and submarines. The humiliation comes exactly 205 years to the day after Nelson's fleet saw off Napoleon at Trafalgar. And The Sun can reveal that just as Prime Minister David Cameron was announcing the axing, TWO Russian submarines were intercepted less than 70 miles off our shores. They had to be tracked by American P3 Orion jets because our Nimrods...
  • Sweetened-drink tax idea generates negative buzz

Buzz up! Pittsburgh's mayor touts a proposed tax on sweetened beverages as one that would promote healthier living through weight loss, but it's really "a money grab," one critic said Wednesday. Another outspoken critic of Allegheny County's tax on alcoholic beverages called this tax an "absurd" idea that would hurt restaurants and businesses. Yet, Mayor Luke Ravenstahl said he plans to meet Monday with state lawmakers in Harrisburg about the city's need to raise $15 million for its pension fund, and the beverage tax modeled after one Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter proposed will be part of the discussion. "If somebody...

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Fossils of a previously undiscovered species of dinosaur have been found in slabs of Utah sandstone that were so hard that explosives had to be used to free some of the remains, scientists said Tuesday. The bones found at Dinosaur National Monument belonged to a type of sauropod—long-necked plant-eaters that were said to be the largest animal ever to roam land. The discovery included two complete skulls from other types of sauropods—an extremely rare find, scientists said.

The dead of Kandahar By Thomas Harding, Defence Correspondent and Richard Westmacott in Kabul (Filed: 04/09/2006) The RAF's ageing fleet of Nimrod reconnaissance aircraft was grounded last night after a crash in Afghanistan claimed the lives of all 14 service personnel on board in the worst single military loss of life in action since the Falklands conflict. The remaining fleet of 15 aircraft operated by 20 crews was having emergency checks before being allowed to resume operational flights. There were immediate Opposition claims that the RAF had to operate with old aircraft and equipment. advertisementThe Tories accused the Government of...

I am a documentary fan. I will even sit through bad documentaries, except anything put out by Mikey Moore, but I stumbled upon a gem a few days ago on television. It is called, Being Caribou. The premise was that these two canucks, male and female, would follow the migration of the Porcupine Herd of Caribou on their migration route in Alaska. No red flags were up yet, but then they said that they were going to do it on foot and I noticed right away that they had a 15" doll of President Bush strapped onto one of the...

The Terri Schiavo case is morphing into a case against the federal judiciary, a frightening proposition that makes the Republican Party seem a wholly owned subsidiary of right-wing religious radicalism. From conservative members of Congress and right-wing Christian activists has come a string of angry condemnations for the federal courts. They've been accused of murdering Schiavo or ordering her "cold-blooded" execution. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, who threatened retribution against the courts over Schiavo, has now asked the House Judiciary Committee to review the entire case and "look at an arrogant, out-of-control judiciary that thumbed their nose at Congress and...
