STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- For years, while the rest of the city teemed with immigrants from across the world, Staten Island remained a bastion of native New Yorkers and first- and second-generation Europeans. Not any more. The Island has the fastest growing immigrant population in the city - a population that has grown by 41 percent since the last Census in 2000, and more than doubled since the 1990 Census.
