The abstract of a scientific study undertaken in 1994 has been making the rounds on social media, and it is shocking on two levels. Austin police have charged a woman with injury to a child after they said she repeatedly fed her 3-year-old daughter human waste, causing her potentially life-threatening infections. An arrest affidavit said that a surveillance video at Dell Children’s Medical Center captured Emily Beth McDonald, 23, on Sunday placing feces in her daughter’s feeding tube. In the field of Psychiatry, Munchausen by Proxy is a disease of a child's custodian, usually a mother, who induces sickness, real or imagined in her child (sometimes resulting in death) in order to gain sympathy and to portray herself as the heroine. Woman pleads guilty to making daughter sick Indianapolis, Feb. 14 - A mother accused of making her daughter sick to get attention pleaded guilty Monday. Doctors at Riley Children's Hospital say they caught 33-year-old Tracie Fleck putting toxins in her daughter's IV. Fleck later confessed to IPD detectives. She entered a guilty plea to charges of felony battery. A judge ordered Fleck to stay away from her 21-month-old daughter. Doctors suspect she suffers from Munchausen by Proxy. That's when a care giver falsifies or induces a patient's illness to gain attention. Fleck faces sentencing on March 2.
