Latter-Day Saint filmmakers are planning a new TV series inspired by ‘The Chosen’, except instead of featuring Jesus in the Gospels, it will feature characters and stories from the Book of Mormon. According to the promo material, the TV series The Promised, created by Ashley Troncoso, “aims to unite faith-based and secular audiences through the highest-quality scripture series ever made” by having similar production values as Dallas Jenkin’s mega-hit Jesus show. Described as a story “as inspired as The Chosen, as epic as The Lord of the Rings, and as gritty as Apocalypto,” the series will take place “600 years...

A man who grew up in an incestuous, polygamist, Mormon cult with 14 mothers and 163 siblings has opened up about the horrors that he was subjected to by its abusive leader. Val Snow, 35, grew up in Utah in a strict Mormon community called the Kingston Group - officially known as the Davis County Cooperative Society and internally as The Order. The Order is a cult that was started during the Great Depression which promotes polygamy and incest to keep bloodlines 'pure.' Val is the oldest of 12 children that his mother gave birth to in the cult, and...

Democratic Rep. Ted Lieu (Calif.) tweeted on Tuesday, "Dear Senator Jeff Flake: Welcome to the #Resistance," in response to Sen. Jeff Flake's (R., Ariz.) decision not to seek reelection and Senate floor speech in which he castigated colleagues for not standing up to President Donald Trump. The congressman retweeted a segment of Flake's speech, adding his message of "welcome" to the Arizona senator whose term is up in 2018. Shortly after Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney enjoyed cookies and soft drinks with the Rev. Billy Graham and his son Franklin Graham on Thursday at the elder Graham's mountaintop retreat, a reference to Mormonism as a cult was scrubbed from the website of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. In a section of the website called Billy Graham's My Answer there had been the question "What is a cult?" Answer: "A cult is any group which teaches doctrines or beliefs that deviate from the biblical message of the Christian faith." "Some of these groups are Jehovah's Witnesess, Mormons, the Unification Church,...

I like Mitt Romney and believe he could be a fine president under different circumstances. As a born-again Christian, I cannot vote for him. As Dr. Robert Jeffress, pastor of a large Baptist church in Dallas, said, Mormonism is not just another denomination; it is a cult. Jeffress is a fine man. I have watched him on television for many years, even though I am not a Baptist. A few years ago, I purchased books, magazines and DVDs from Lamb and Lion Ministries. Two DVDs concerned cults. The largest and most well-known is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter...
  • Can we please keep comments about the Mormon faith off the political discussion threads?

As we enter the GOP primary season, I'm starting to notice more and more an annoying trend here in FR. It seems as though everytime there's an article, or someone posts a comment about Romney, either pro or con, it nearly always devolves into an extended, and acrimonious discussion about the Mormon faith. Those who defend it, and those who, for whatever reasons, can't abide it, both sides seem determined to wage an "end of times" batte on all the FR threads. Frankly, I'm tired of it, and just wish it would stop. I think that probably 99% of others...
  • Burning Bridges Over Glenn Beck

I’ve entitled this column “Burning Bridges over Beck” only because the original title, “How to Lose Conservative Friends and Alienate Readers While Drawing a Line in the Sand on the Banks of the Rubicon” was, as the Mrs. put it, “a bit verbose.”          Let’s get down to it. Glenn Beck is an influential figure; no one can deny that he has made considerable advances for the conservative movement. I have never watched his television program, so most of what I know about him I have learned by watching the response to him. That response is very impressive. The rally in Washington this...
