<p>WASHINGTON - At least 80 wealthy liberals have pledged to contribute at least $1 million each to fund a network of think tanks and advocacy groups, to compete with the potent conservative infrastructure built up during the last three decades.</p>

<p>I got a call from comedian-activist-liberal icon-radio guy Al Franken on Monday. It was regarding a column I'd written dissing his new radio network, Air America ("Air America circles endlessly, but always to the left," Opinions Sunday). I'd say he was just this side of mad.</p>
