It is illegal to mod game save data and game consoles in Japan. Both are punishable by up to five years in prison and fines up to 5 million yen ($46,000). This was first published by Japanese game sites like Hachima Kikou after peripheral maker Cyber Gadget stopped selling its Save Editor data tool, allowing players to use cheats and patch codes. We weren't too surprised when we learned that Final Fantasy 15 is coming to PC, but the news that came after was definitely unexpected: it will be moddable and have Steam Workshop support. I don't typically expect big, console-focused games to even address the question of moddability, never mind endorse modding. Recently, game director Hajime Tabata did express some hesitation, though. A friend of mine asked back in May "Can you build an Xbox 360 laptop?" And I responded "Sure, can you pay for it?" He agreed, and thus I set forth on what was surely to be my most complex and insanely ridiculous videogame project yet.
