The only Army soldier listed as missing and captured in Iraq was promoted this month to sergeant as Army officials vowed to keep searching for him. Sgt. Keith "Matt" Maupin of Batavia, Ohio, was reported missing after his fuel-truck convoy was ambushed on April 9, 2004, in a western suburb of Baghdad. The attack killed another member of Maupin's reserve unit, the 724th Transportation Company from Bartonville, Ill., and three U.S. contractors. Another contractor was captured but later escaped.

Samples of a potentially lethal flu strain sent to Lebanon and Mexico did not reach the respective laboratories, the World Health Organization says. The WHO said it was trying to trace the samples, which were sent by a US testing organisation. The samples are of Asian flu, which killed between one and four million people in 1957 but disappeared by 1968. More than 3,700 laboratories in 18 countries received the testing kits and have been racing to destroy the virus. Authorities in California and Florida are looking for two teenage girls reported missing in separate incidents. In California, the FBI’s Sacramento office is helping in the search for Ashleigh Markley, a 14-year-old who disappeared on March 29 as she was visiting her grandmother and other relatives in Lincoln, Calif.
