NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) — The Coast Guard Academy is disenrolling seven cadets for failing to comply with the military’s COVID-19 vaccination mandate, after their requests for religious exemptions were denied and they were ordered to leave campus. The academy in New London, Connecticut, confirmed the disenrollments Tuesday, The Day newspaper reported. A lawyer for several of the cadets said they were told on Aug. 18 that they had to leave campus by 4 p.m. the next day. “They were escorted to the gate like they were criminals or something,” the lawyer, Michael Rose, told the newspaper. “No one helped...

Diocese too liberal, book says By SUSAN EVANS, The TRIBUNE-DEMOCRAT May 05, 2002 A controversial new book names the Altoona-Johnstown Roman Catholic Diocese as one of many dioceses that turns away qualified candidates for the priesthood in favor of a “gay subculture” and threatens the Church with dangerous reforms. The book criticizes a State College psychologist who screens candidates for the diocese, saying his view of homosexuality is too liberal. In response, the diocese says the author never contacted the diocese to verify any facts, and that the author lacks credibility. The psychologist says the characterization is false, the...

31 December, 2003If you're not a "nice guy"... by Jeffrey JacksonSearching for one’s vocation in life is a most daunting task. This is especially true given that society today is not only apathetic, but perhaps hostile, to the meaning of the word "vocation." It is no longer within the standard definition of the term "success" to have found a vocation. Oftentimes, a man of faith searching for his vocation, perhaps with lack of encouragement from his family and certainly no help from society, will turn to his diocesan vocation office for much needed wisdom and guidance on these critical matters....

WWW.LIBEL.COM Bloggers beware. Author Michael S. Rose has taken some hard hits from critics of his controversial book Goodbye! Good Men!, which alleges that liberal dissenters and homosexual cliques within the Roman Catholic clergy have caused a phony crisis in priestly vocations. But only one critic has driven him to threaten a libel suit: a Michigan Catholic priest named Rob Johansen. Their dispute, which may be headed to court, provides a cautionary tale for the thousands of people who, ignorant of libel law, publish their opinions on the Internet heedless of the serious risks they are running. Johansen, a theological...

I arrived home today to find the September issue of New Oxford Review in my mailbox. I was pleased to see that NOR had weighed in on the Michael Rose question that has occupied many of us on Free Republic. I have always respected their judgement, scholarship, and no-nonsense attitude. Below are some quotes from their article, entitled, Killing Michael Rose. Though I'd like to post the whole article, NOR's policy is to preclude such reproductions until the issue is a few months old. Thus, some highlights: Their overall opinion of Goodbye, Good Men: "...[W]e regard Michael S. Rose's new...

A Question of Integrity: Crisis Magazine Opens New Round in The War of Rose The September issue of Crisis Magazine takes on the accuracy and journalistic integrity of Michael Rose and his book, Goodbye! Good Men. This is the latest round of criticism of Rose’s controversial book: The first round was opened by Amy Welborn in a review she wrote for Our Sunday Visitor. Her relatively restrained criticisms were of the overall tone and overreaching claims of the book, and the fact that Rose relied heavily on pseudonymous sources. Next I wrote a review for Culture Wars, in which I...

I make it a habit to review books on Amazon.com and BN.com as I read them. Of course, since I just finished Goodbye, Good Men by Michael Rose, I went and reviewed that as well. Not unexpectedly, the Call-to-Action/Catholics-for-Free-Choice/Kumbaya-Liberal-Dissenter/Dignity crowd has had the same idea and was busy writing reviews that trashed the book. May I propose a bit of activism? If you read Goodbye, Good Men, why not hit Amazon and BN.com and review it? Of course, be honest. I gave the book 5-stars, but I certainly don't expect everyone to be completely uncritical. I think most of you...

The following statement has been issued by Father Kevin A. Codd, Rector of The American College, concerning allegations made about The College in the recently published book Goodbye! Good Men.It is with sadness that I am obliged in the interests of justice and truth to respond briefly to scurrilous charges made against The American College of the Immaculate Conception, its students, and faculty members in the book Goodbye! Good Men, by Michael S. Rose. First of all, the former student upon whose testimony the allegations are based was dismissed from The American College seminary program with just and reasonable cause. ...
