Yahoo has begun shutting down some of its digital magazines as part of the struggling online pioneer’s latest reorganization plan. In a blog post, Yahoo global editor in chief Martha Nelson announced plans to start phasing out some operations as it focuses on connecting with readers for news, sports, finance and lifestyle. “To that end, today we will begin phasing out the following digital magazines: Yahoo Food, Yahoo Health, Yahoo Parenting, Yahoo Makers, Yahoo Travel, Yahoo Autos and Yahoo Real Estate,” Nelson said. “While these digital magazines will no longer be published, you will continue to find the topics they...

You can call Katie Couric the $10 million anchor. That’s how much Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer is forking over to retain the Web portal’s global news anchor, several sources told The Post on Friday. The new contract, agreed to in the last several days but not yet finalized, gives Couric a stratospheric annual pay package in line with that of NBC’s suspended Nightly News anchor Brian Williams.Only Couric is actually anchoring a newscast. The 58-year-old journalist, who had been negotiating a second contract for the past few months, won a significant rise. While the new deal contains a few...
  • How Marissa Mayer Fell Asleep and Kept Ad Executives Waiting For Hours

For media companies, the Cannes advertising festival is all about getting face time with top media buyers and advertisers. Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer missed a golden opportunity to do just that last week. Last Tuesday evening, Interpublic Group arranged a private dinner at the swanky L’Oasis for Ms. Mayer to meet executives from marketers such as Mondelez International MDLZ, brewer MillerCoors and Greek yogurt maker Chobani. It was supposed to be a chance for Interpublic and some of its clients to get a first hand update from Ms. Mayer on what Yahoo has to offer. But Ms. Mayer was nearly...
  • The Interview: Carly Fiorina (Life after HP and a U.S. Senate run)

Raj Mathai sits down for a rare one-on-one interview with former HP CEO Carly Fiorina. Carly Fiorina's been out of the spotlight for nearly three years, after losing a hard-fought U.S. Senate race to longtime Democratic incumbent Barbara Boxer. So what's the former Hewlett-Packard CEO doing these days? "I'm not doing any one thing full-time, and that's the biggest difference," Fiorina said. "I remain engaged politically, but I'm at the stage in my life now where I choose the things I can do and that's a wonderful place to be." These days, Fiorina splits her time between Sausalito and Virginia....
  • Report: Yahoo CEO (and Her Former Employer Google) Insist That New Hires

Sometimes one learns interesting things perusing stories at tech web sites. A report by Michelle Maisto at Eweek about Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer has one nugget of information which has been out there for a while, and another which I believe hasn't been and still isn't widely known about both Mayer and her former employer Google. Both items indicate to me that Mayer a woman and the two tech companies involved are getting free passes from the press which a male CEO and non-tech would likely not receive. Excerpts follow the jump (internal link is in original; bolds are mine):...
  • Mika: Where I Used To Work, Successful Women Were Sabotaged By Leaks—Maybe By Other Women!

Whoah! What place was Mika Brzezinski talking about? On today's Morning Joe, Brzezinski said that at a place where she used to work, "any woman who did anything or got to the top immediately had something revealed to the press or online or whatever that would bring them down." And whatever happened to solidarity among the sisters? Mika added: I suggest that some might even argue that it's women doing that." We don't know which employer Mika had in mind, but before coming to MSNBC, by far Brzezinski's longest stints were at CBS. View the video here.
  • Marissa Mayer, Who Just Banned Working From Home, Paid To Have A Nursery Built At Her Office

Last Friday, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer banned employees from working remotely. Human resources boss Jackie Reses sent out a memo telling all remote employees that, by June, they needed to be working in Yahoo offices. This upset many employees – mothers in particular. -snip- Mayer – who had a baby last fall – is a working mother, but she's able to bring her kid to work. That's because when Mayer had her son last fall, she paid to have a nursery built in her office.
