What might happen in the upcoming year? We asked a few of National Review Online’s sages to prophesy the events of 2011.JOHN DERBYSHIRE Domestic affairs: 2011 will be the year that the full scale of our fiscal crisis becomes clear, even to politicians. They will likely be able to postpone the inevitable for another year or so, though. (The inevitable being real, massive reductions in federal and state spending, entitlements cut to the bone, major public-sector layoffs, etc.) Start practicing the term “QE3.” Of course, the longer the politicians postpone it, the worse the crash will be: but politicians...

With all the slimy morals and leftist propagandizing in our popular culture, it’s easy to overlook entertainment’s more positive influences. On January 10, pro-abortion activist Eleanor Bader wrote a blog post for RH Reality Check that shouldn’t go unnoticed, both for bringing several examples to our attention and for illustrating the radical response. Bader highlights the following Christian and pro-life celebrity activists: Bella star Eduardo Verastegui, Christian band Barlow Girl, Skillet lead singer John Cooper, and Josh Wilson of Christian band Silverline. None of these names are as big as, say, Bono or Miley Cyrus, but they’re all successful and...

by Kathleen Gilbert Wed Jan 26 12:30 PM EST WASHINGTON, D.C., January 25, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) - In a bittersweet ending to a joyful March for Life this year, dozens of post-abortive mothers took to the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court Monday afternoon to tell their stories of fear, anguish, and redemption, giving a rare glimpse into the terrible human cost of Roe v. Wade. Of the 45 who spoke, 40 were newcomers, according to Georgette Forney of Silent No More Awareness, including a group of twelve that had traveled from Arizona to brave the blustery January weather. Over 100...

And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto me from the ground. (Genesis 4:10)America has recently passed a gruesome milestone, we have had the fifty millionth abortion. It is staggering isn’t it? Fifty million boys and girls since 1973. They would range in age from 1 to 38 years old, had they been allowed to live. Fifty million people! By now they would have been husbands and wives, mothers and fathers, skilled and unskilled laborers , professionals, scientists, ministers, leaders, who knows what we have forfeited ? Fifty million human lives snuffed out,...

As we gather for the 38th annual March for Life, the American Society for the Defense of Tradition, Family and Property (TFP) joins countless Americans nationwide in giving a voice to the unborn. This year, we stand on the crest of the great national wave of reaction against intrusive government. Last November, American citizens united in this backlash said no to the idea that government should decide matters that belong to private citizens. In the middle of this fierce debate could be found the compassionate voices of America’s anti-abortion majority who protest the most horrific intrusion permitted by the State:...

The magnificence of life is really too wonderful too describe. But I found this description some years ago which summons reverence by its very ability to baffle the mind: MIRACLE OF LIFE- Consider the miracle of the human body.  Its chemistry is just as extraordinarily well tuned as is the physics of the cosmos.  Our world on bothsides of the divide that separates life from lifelessness is filled with wonder.  Each human cell has a double helix library of three billion base pairs providing fifty thousand genes.  These three billion base pairs and fifty thousand genes somehow engineer 100 trillion...

Today marks the annual March for Life in Washington, DC. It’s bitter cold in the nation’s capital today, but the marchers are undeterred. They’re accustomed to being frozen out. They don’t get much media coverage, no matter how impressive their numbers. Their speakers don’t wind up on many evening news broadcasts, no matter how powerful their words. To the mainstream media, pro-lifers are pointlessly fighting a battle that ended in 1973. They might as well be re-enacting the Battle of Gettysburg in period costume. Their story is not newsworthy because it cannot end with a grand political climax that settles...

Gov. Chris Christie made brief remarks today before hundreds who weathered bitter temperatures to mark the anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision in Roe v. Wade, which set the foundation for legalized abortion, 38 years ago. Speaking for five minutes without a coat, Christie told the attendees that "every life is precious and a gift from God." Christie discussed no changes in policy or altering the judicial system to try to undo standing laws that allow abortions. One of Christie’s few policy moves was to cut funding to Planned Parenthood, which funds abortion services. "What I encourage all of you...

ST. PAUL – Nearly four thousand Minnesotans marched at the State Capitol today to urge lawmakers to ban taxpayer funded abortions. They also called for a prohibition on abortions after the point at which an unborn child can feel pain. The annual Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life (MCCL) March for Life commemorates the millions of lives lost to abortion. The 2011 MCCL March for Life marked the 38th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s Jan. 22, 1973, Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton decisions that have resulted in the deaths of more than 555,000 unborn Minnesota children (Minnesota Department...

As marchers gather in Washington, D.C., for the March for Life today, Jan. 24, pro-lifers across the country have been gathering for days. On Saturday, Jan. 22, in downtown San Francisco, Walk for Life West Coast broke another record: More than 40,000 people gathered to hear pro-life speakers, pray and stand united for an end to abortion. The seventh-annual walk took place on the 38th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. “We are here to break the bondage of the culture of death,” Walk for Life co-founder and co-chair Dolores Meehan told the crowd. Meehan said the crowd estimate was conservative....

The annual March for Life pro-life rally is set to hit the nation’s capitol on Jan. 24, bringing thousands of pro-life activists to Washington to commemorate the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion nationwide. Held every year since 1974, the year following the high court’s decision, the march regularly draws upwards of 150,000 activists each year to Washington to both mark the anniversary of the Roe decision and to oppose the continued existence of abortion on demand. This year’s march will feature Rep. Michelle Bachmann (R-Minn.) as the keynote speaker at its Rose Dinner event that marks...
  • Going Down To The Capital For The March For Life

Tomorrow, St Joseph the Worker Parish, my home parish, will be taking a busload of us including our pastor to Washington DC for the Annual March for Life. Just one of the reasons  I love this march is that we get to see the Church at its best. Young high school and college students, families with small children and nuns and priests from every order marching for life. The Franciscans in their moccasins without socks in 29 degrees, Mother Teresa's Missionary's of Charity  with their white and blue striped saris, you name them, they will be there.    Many different...

Just a quick little AAR. Wow!Just got back from that Mass. I have gone to the Vigil Mass almost every year since 2000. This had to be the most crowded I have ever seen it. The seating capacity of the Shrine is 3,500 and the normal SRO capacity is 6,000. This event violated all possible fire codes, even DC's fire code. My guess is that there had to be 8,000 - 9,000 in the upper church and probably another 1,000 - 2,000 in the lower level (memorial hall + crypt church). I would not be surprised if my guesses turned...

For those who have never been to Washington, D.C.‘s March for Life, they may not be aware of just how much pro-life activity is going on around the city in the days leading up to the actual March, which takes place following a noon rally on Monday. Several Register staff will be in attendance at the March, and various other events, blogging, Facebooking, and tweeting live as possible. Register editors Tom Wehner and John Burger will be in attendance, as will writers Steven Greydanus and myself. In fact, believe it or not, while I’ve been a Catholic journalist for nearly...
