It's a pretty odd business decision if you turn it into a newspaper version of Fox News Channel. By Tuesday night, Adelson's new management team had begun to take the reins, firing back in their own editorial, which ran on Wednesday's front page, that they would "publish a newspaper that is fair, unbiased and accurate."

On Wednesday, September 1 James Jay Lee stormed into the Discovery Channel’s office and took several hostages. He had a long list of grievances, most related to the human population and the environment. His rhetoric made him sound more like a real-life Kodos the Executioner than an environmental activist. To put it mildly, Lee was a man with an ax to grind. People will argue for months as to whether the guy was a leftist or a rightey, and it's a good bet that neither side will be willing to say, "Yeah, he was one of us." Who'd want to?

LANCASTER, Pa. -- The family of a middle school student who was given detention for wearing a T-shirt bearing the image of a gun has filed a federal freedom of speech lawsuit against the school district. Donald Miller III, 14, went to Penn Manor High School in December wearing a T-shirt he said was intended to honor his uncle, a U.S. Army soldier fighting in Iraq. The shirt bears the image of a military sidearm and on the front pocket says "Volunteer Homeland Security." On the back, over another image of the weapon, are the words "Special issue Resident Lifetime...

In a conference call with reporters a few moments ago, Republican National Committee chairman Ken Mehlman described Senator Harry Reid's attack on Vice President Dick Cheney as a "Lyndon LaRouche moment" in which Reid, according to Mehlman, embraced a number of conspiracy theories about the vice president. During a press appearance yesterday, Reid said: The manipulation of intelligence to sell a war in Iraq, Vice President Cheney's involved in that. The White House energy policy that puts big oil ahead of the American consumer, Vice President Cheney is behind that. Leaking classified information to discredit White House critics, the vice...

SALEM, Ore. (AP) — State Rep. Kelley Wirth was charged Thursday with possession of a controlled substance after police found what they said was methamphetamine in her car following an alleged auto assault against her last month, the Statesman Journal reported. The Salem newspaper said on its Web site that the Corvallis Democrat and her attorney, Jane Aiken, met with Salem police at about 10:30 a.m. Thursday. Wirth was cited, fingerprinted and photographed but was not interviewed by investigators, said Sgt. Mike Scanlon. She was given a Nov. 3 court date. "She showed up with her attorney," Scanlon said. "I...

The Republican Party's electoral dominance of the South is due to its willingness to employ "racial politics," according to a University of Maryland professor who also referred to the region as the "Old Confederacy," during remarks Friday at the liberal Take Back America conference in Washington, D.C. Gar Alperovitz, said the Republican Party represents "the dark side," and has been able to exploit southern states because "a radical shift has occurred in racial politics, a radical shift. "It isn't simply the moral issues. It is the fundamental implicit and explicit racial division of the working class" that allows Republican victories...

Above, thanks to Vik Rubenfeld, is a pic of me, Lawrence O'Donnell and his furiously throbbing neck veins from the Dennis Miller show the other night. (And thanks to Emmanuelle for providing an almost identical shot until Vik made this crystal clear one available. Not shown: former San Francisco mayor Willie Brown, the other Varsity Panelist.) What led to all this was a discussion of how Arnold Schwarzenegger's popularity is sinking because of his fight with the California teachers unions -- which balk at the idea that some teachers are better (or worse) than others, and should be rewarded...or...

No intern, cigar, or pizza involved in Reichian frolic Look, if you told us that a former Bill Clinton cabinet member was posing nude for a pin-up calendar, we'd be hard-pressed to pick which pol we'd most like to see in the buff. Reno? Albright? Shalala? Norton? So imagine The Smoking Gun's disappointment when we learned that Robert Reich, who headed the Department of Labor, was the stripping Secretary. Reich, the 4' 10" Democratic dynamo who was routed in last year's Massachusetts gubernatorial primary, posed last week for a 2004 calendar that will raise funds for a Cambridge community television...

Look, if you told us that a former Bill Clinton cabinet member was posing nude for a pin-up calendar, we'd be hard-pressed to pick which pol we'd most like to see in the buff. Reno? Albright? Shalala? Norton? All fine choices--va-va-va-voom--in more ways than one. So imagine The Smoking Gun's disappointment when we learned that Robert Reich, who headed the Department of Labor, was the stripping Secretary.
