It is only a couple of weeks into the new year but it looks like we already have a strong contender for the dopiest article of the year, emphasis on "dope" as we shall see. A bizarre solution to reducing campus rapes comes to us by way of Annie Lowery of New York magazine. Her solution is to raise taxes on beer while also encouraging people to smoke more marijuana. After acknowledging that the Rolling Stone story about a drunken fraternity rape case was just a fairy tale, Lowery takes a deep plunge into the world of utterly stupid:
  • Deadly concept- Idea worse than film, but 'Death of a President' still predictable, preachy

Death of a President Critic's rating: 1.5 stars As a medium-left liberal with a fierce belief in free speech and artistic expression, I'm proud to live in a country where the government can't prevent the release of a fictional film depicting the assassination of the real-life president. That said, I find the idea repugnant and morally objectionable. Ever since early September, when the Drudge Report posted a dramatic, black-and-white "news photo" fictionalizing the assassination of President Bush, the docudrama "Death of a President" has been the center of much controversy -- and deserved criticism. (FindLaw) -- As the scandal over the leak of CIA agent Valerie Plame's identity has continued to unfold, there is a renewed focus on Karl Rove -- the White House deputy chief of staff whom President Bush calls his political "architect." Newsweek has reported that Matt Cooper, in an e-mail to his bureau chief at Time magazine, wrote that he had spoken "to Rove on double super-secret background for about two min[ute]s before he went on vacation ..." In that conversation, Rove gave Cooper "big warning" that Time should not "get too far out on Wilson." Rove was referring, of...

New York City is the home base of Fox News, National Review, and “The Rush Limbaugh Show.” We’re in our tenth straight year under Republican mayors. And we’re the world headquarters of heartless, rapacious, crush-the-workers Finance Capitalism. But none of that makes our town Nirvana for conservatives. Politically, we’re blue through and through. Al Gore’s margin over George W. Bush here was four to one, and the city’s congressional delegation consists of twelve Democrats and one Republican. New York has its share of paleocons and more than its share of neocons (neoconservatism having been invented on the Upper West Side,...
