On Monday, Goucher College journalism professor and longtime Baltimore Sun media critic David Zurawik accused President Donald Trump of using a dictator tactic — telling so many lies as to exhaust the free press into silence. "He says something that’s really offensive about immigrants, and then Tucker Carlson says immigration makes us a dirtier country," Zurawik said. "That is really destructive to American life." He urged journalists to fight back. "We have to denounce it, but every time we do that, every time we chase that down, he is setting the agenda for what we cover, and none of us,...

The publisher of USA Today has received a $1.36 billion takeover bid from a media group with a history of taking over struggling newspapers and slashing costs. MNG Enterprises, better known as Digital First Media, said in a letter to Gannett Co. Monday that its leadership team has failed to show that it can run the company effectively. The Wall Street Journal was first to report that the hedge-fund backed MNG has built up a 7.5 percent stake in Gannett, and that it has been rebuffed repeatedly by the company about a sale. Gannett said Monday it received the letter,...

Gannett on Tuesday walked away from its attempted takeover of Tronc, the publisher of the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune and other major dailies. USA Today publisher Gannett’s target was elusive from the beginning, with a publicly contentious back-and-forth between the two companies. Tronc, formerly known as Tribune Publishing, rejected at least two bids from Gannett because it said it preferred to go it alone, focusing on tech-driven initiatives involving artificial intelligence and global expansion in entertainment news and video. Shares of Tronc Inc. plunged 20 percent in early trading. …

ITHACA NY--A Gannett-owned Ithaca newspaper will refuse to participate in a gubernatorial debate in that city, after the event's organizers rejected its questions including one that seemed to advance 9/11 conspiracy theories.According to the Ithaca Journal, the rejected questions for the debate included the following: Thousands of New Yorkers continue to suffer from the 2001 terror attacks in NYC. Families and surviving victims have sought additional investigations on the attack that were never addressed by the 9/11 Commission Report. Do you accept the findings of that Commission, or are there areas of that investigation that still leave you with unanswered...

Speaking at a “Girls Who Code” event in New York City, self-identified democratic socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez hit back against critics of her Green New Deal resolution. “I just introduced the Green New Deal two weeks ago, and it’s creating all of this conversation,” the New York Democratic congresswoman said Friday to moderator Reshma Saujani, the CEO of Girls Who Code. “Why? Because no one else has even tried. Because no one else has even tried.” Ocasio-Cortez claimed that — regardless of success — the “power” goes to the individual who tries. “So people are like, ‘Oh it’s unrealistic. Oh it’s...

Will liberal outlets like Politifact fact check the geography-challenged Bernie Sanders? Socialists like Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez aren't big on math. It just gets in the way of setting utopian, unachievable goals. Take Sanders today. At the very beginning of his formal announcement video, Sanders set this goal: "an unprecedented, grassroots campaign of one million active volunteers in every state in our country."Um, just a little problem there, Bernie. The population of your own state of Vermont is only 627,000. How can you possibly not know that? And there are five other states with populations under one million. So, yeah,...

In the early 1990’s, the famous biologist Richard Dawkins wrote an essay entitled Viruses of the Mind. In this essay, Dawkins describes religion as a mind virus that spreads from human to human for the sake of its own survival. Think whatever you want about Dawkins or his theories on religion. I personally think religion has become much less of a threat than political ideology since The Enlightenment period, which is why I will attempt to apply his mind virus theory to what I consider the biggest ideological threat to American values, socialism. Here are a few symptoms that Dawkins...
