  • Amazon finally has a color Kindle, and it looks pretty good

    10/16/2024 11:26:05 AM PDT · by algore · 8 replies
For years, Kindle users have asked Amazon to make a color version of its e-reader. Now, the company is finally delivering: it’s launching the new Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition, a device that has a lot in common with the new Paperwhite, except instead of black and white it’s color all over. The Colorsoft costs $279.99 and is available for preorder today, with shipments starting October 30th. Making the Colorsoft happen, Amazon executives said at a launch event on Tuesday in New York City, required a lot more than just swapping in a new display. “Frankly, the technology just wasn’t ready”...

If you are interested in the Eastern Front of WW II, the most brutal war in human history, it appears Amazon has several title in the Kindle format at rock bottom prices. The David Glantz two volume history of the Battle of Smolensk is available in Kindle for $2.99 each. Mr. Glantz has taken advantage of the opening of the Red Army archives after the collapse of the Soviet Union. These are documentary style works filled with orders from the Soviet High Command, Stavka, and below to construct the history of this forgotten battle. He goes into detail about the...
  • Did Amazon install surveillance software on its devices this past week?

I'm concerned about an Amazon Fire HD 10 tablet that started showing ads on the 'lock' page without warning about 5 days ago. Amazon will 'unlock' your Amazon device from the obtrusive ads for $15. My investigation determined that Amazon claims that the tablet was sold at a discount in order to add ads, and that's why they are charging $15 to remove the ads. Well, odds are that Amazon turned the ads on last week when my device started showing ads after a software update. What is really unsettling is that this device has no access to the battery...

Amazon has been selling Kindles for 10 years now, but “waterproof” hasn’t appear on its list of incremental technological advancements until now. The company just announced a new version of its popular e-reader that builds on last year’s Kindle design and now has an IPX8 waterproof rating. The new Kindle Oasis — the same name as last year’s premium Kindle — has jumped up in size, moving from a 6-inch screen to a 7-inch screen. It has an aluminum back, which gives it a more premium look and feel than the Kindles with soft-touch plastic. Unlike last year’s Kindle Oasis,...

Plugging a Kindle Paperwhite into a PC running Windows 10 with the Anniversary Update installed sparks a full system meltdown, it is claimed. Connecting the Amazon e-reader to a fully up-to-date W10 machine via USB triggers an immediate Blue Screen of Death, according to complaints on Microsoft's support forum. All the trouble started when people downloaded and installed the Anniversary Update, which arrived at the turn of the month. That's the same upgrade that has knackered millions of webcams and caused some systems to freeze up. The crash kicks off in the storage partition driver partmgr.sys, with a bugcheck code...

Many hundreds of Amazon Kindle Fire users are reporting their Kindle registration data and all account information stored on their Kiindle electronic readers have been wiped clean - the kindle has been returned back to zero-zero or original empty. No name, no account, no stored books, no stored videos or audio or music, not even a single piece of anything loaded on the device. On the Amazon feedback site, there is no solution. No one has reported losing power or physical harm (dropped the kindle, dipped it in water or a tub, lost power completely, nor did anything but "turned...

In announcing the Oasis on Wednesday, Amazon said its ultimate goal is to make the hardware eventually "disappear," delivering the simplest possible experience for readers. In the retailer's words, the Oasis is "another step toward this mission," weighing in at 4.6 ounces and measuring 3.4 millimeters at its thinnest point. In order to achieve this svelte design, Amazon trimmed battery life on the Kindle itself, and developed a new dual-battery design. The Kindle Oasis ships with an included charging cover that delivers "months" of uptime, according to Amazon.

AUSTIN -- President Obama defended government efforts to preserve law enforcement access to digital devices Friday, telling a crowd that included many technology innovators that society cannot end up "fetishizing our phones above every other value." Obama made his remarks during a keynote discussion at the yearly South by Southwest Interactive conference here, after being asked by Texas Tribune journalist Evan Smith to comment on the larger implications of the pending fight between the FBI and Apple over access to an iPhone used by one of the shooters in December's terrorist attack in San Bernardino.
