• Suggestions Needed for Jr. High Social Studies Textbooks

Hello all, I am a junior high SS/Religion teacher in one of the Cincinnati Catholic Schools. We are using an updated textbook from Prentice Hall (Pearson). To be blunt, I hate this textbook! It's all over the place on our American historical roots as well as very biased against American ingenuity and foresight. My principal and parish priest are very open to using resources that have not 'revised' the world's history. Can anyone suggest a textbook company that is not revising history? The textbook we use now is called "America, History of our Nation."

It isn’t “acceptable” in polite society to support Donald Trump, I am told. America’s bullies – the sneering, “we know better than you” establishment classes – have made many cower in silence rather than proclaim that Trump is a tremendous presidential candidate and has earned their support. It is a replay of the worst aspects of high school peer-pressure, about what’s OK and what isn’t, based on selfish interests and prejudices. Well, enough of that. Trump is already changing America for the better – and is encouraging us to boldly stand up for our beliefs about what’s best for our...

QUARTZ HILL - It's not every day middle school students get to arrest their principal or watch a teacher peal out of the school parking lot. But for 60 students at Joe Walker Middle School, daring escapes and creative costumes were as much a part of the school year as textbooks and rulers. These students spent months of class time writing and producing their own movie, a 30-minute mystery/action/comedy titled "White Rose." "I was waiting to find the right teacher to work with," Anderson said. That person turned out to be computer lab teacher Debbie Fitzpatrick. Since teaming up in...

BAD SEX WRITING, LIKE A POORLY made blue film, is a repository of cliché: a world in which male members are invariably firm, breasts pert and limbs permanently entangled. But the good stuff — ah! — that has a power beyond the finest moving image, beyond, even, the memory of sex itself; it is unbounded by time constraints, regrettable haircuts and poor lighting. Written sex also has the distinction of being the only erotic art one can indulge in on public transport without fear of arrest. This is a truth well known by schoolgirls, who from the age of 13...

A teacher at Mountain View Middle School in Mendham Borough left his classroom in June as a man, and plans to return to school next month as a woman. Some parents and teachers have accepted teacher Kerri McCaffrey's decision to embrace his feminine identity and undergo gender reassignment surgery. A few others have concerns about whether middle school-age children should have to deal with such issues. McCaffrey said she can't imagine why she wouldn't come back to school. "I just want to be Kerri McCaffrey, a great teacher like I've always been," said the 41-year-old language arts teacher. "I'm a...

Picture the mating rites of middle-schoolers. Perhaps you imagine hand-holding and first kisses, girls trying out eye shadow, boys sneaking a peek at vulgar men's magazines.

The list goes on. Middle schools that used to do without dress codes now must send home exhaustive inventories of forbidden garments, from tube tops to too-low hip-huggers. Schools that used to handle crude language on a case-by-case basis now must have ''no-profanity'' policies. And sexual-harassment training is a normal part of middle-school curriculum.
