NEW YORK, Feb 28 (Reuters) - Former U.S. vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin asked a U.S. court on Monday for a new trial after losing her defamation case against the New York Times (NYT.N) earlier this month, and requested that the judge overseeing the case be disqualified. Palin's attorneys said last week they would take those steps because several jurors received push notifications on their cellphones before deliberations were over about U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff's decision to dismiss the case regardless of their verdict.

NEW YORK, Feb 23 (Reuters) - Sarah Palin, the former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican U.S. vice presidential candidate, plans to seek a new trial and have the judge disqualified after losing her defamation case against the New York Times. U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff in Manhattan discussed Palin's plan at a hearing on Wednesday, and said he will issue a written opinion by March 1 explaining why he dismissed her case while jurors were deliberating. He said he would speed up the opinion because of the "fracas" surrounding the dismissal. The unusual hearing came eight days after jurors rejected...
  • 'He shouldn't have done this': Legal experts slam Clinton-appointed judge for tossing out Sarah Palin's NY Times libel case while the jury was STILL deliberating and say he has interfered in the legal process

Legal experts have slammed the Clinton-appointed New York judge who tossed Sarah Palin's libel lawsuit against The New York Times while jurors are still deliberating the case and say he's effectively hobbled the jury. 'I would have expected the judge to wait for the jury to return its verdict before ruling on the motion for judgment as a matter of law, because there was no urgency to issuing that ruling,' attorney Mitchell Epner, of Rottenberg Lipman Rich PC, told Law & Crime on Monday. 'Nothing would have changed if he had waited for the verdict to have been announced, or...

CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin said Kyle Rittenhouse, the teen standing trial for multiple felonies following a shooting in Kenosha, Wis., last year, is fortunate it is not crime in America to "be an idiot." "What kind of idiot 17-year-old gets a giant gun and goes to a riot? He has no license, he has no training, he thinks he's going to scrub graffiti off with his AR-15? I mean, the stupidity of this. What could possibly go wrong? Well a lot went wrong," Toobin said Wednesday during CNN's coverage of the Rittenhouse murder trial, which is taking place this...

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — The State Bar's Disciplinary Board has recommended that former South Dakota Gov. and U.S. Rep. Bill Janklow should regain his license to practice law next February. If the state Supreme Court accepts that recommendation, it would mean Janklow would be reinstated to practice law about a year before his probation ends for second-degree manslaughter and other convictions related to an August 2003 crash that killed a motorcycle driver from Minnesota.

Bush should accept Saddam's debate offer - unless he's yella Matt Treadwell It's the most constructive idea I've heard since the American network media jumped on the president's "Showdown with Saddam" bandwagon. And the surprising part is - now brace yourself - it came from Iraq's "evil dictator" himself. CBS news anchor Dan Rather reported Monday Iraqi President Saddam Hussein proposed participating in a debate with President Bush via live radio and television satellite linkup. Rather is the first American journalist to be granted an interview with Saddam in a decade. The interview has been shown in portions throughout this...
