Democrat Senate President John Morse is touting his voting record over the past seven years in flyers and radio ads to fight an impending Sept. 10 recall election. But, Morse has faced criticism for avoiding direct confrontation with voters. That duck-and-cover maneuver set off a sizzling commentary Saturday when Morse apparently again refused requests to appear on Jeff Crank’s KVOR talk radio show to answer callers’ questions even as Morse is airing his anti-recall ads on the radio station – ads Crank says are filled with “inaccuracies.” As the verbal dustup occurred on the air, SD 11 Republican candidate Bernie...

Votes by U.S. Rep. John Salazar. D-Colo., on health care and the stimulus bill will get plenty of attention in the coming weeks from a squad of Grand Valley activists backed up by advertising critical of Salazar’s record. Americans for Prosperity, a non-partisan, free-enterprise, free-market organization, organized the meeting of about 80 people in the Museum of Western Colorado’s Whitman Educational Center to show them how to conduct phone banks and walk precincts in the coming weeks. The idea, Colorado Americans for Prosperity head Jeff Crank said, “is to simply educate people about John Salazar and show how he’s voted...

Bentley Rayburn officially launched his campaign Thursday to unseat a fellow Republican, Congressman Doug Lamborn, by touting himself as "best positioned to reunite this party." Rayburn, who finished third in last year's primary for what was then an open seat, becomes the second challenger in the 2008 race, joining 2006 primary runner-up Jeff Crank. Lamborn has not made his re-election bid official, but he is raising money. Rayburn, a retired Air Force major general, devoted a good portion of his speech to "the war against radical Islam." He said the ongoing battle is a multi-generational struggle that will not be...

Colorado Springs - Rep. Doug Lamborn left two voice mails at the home of a couple who questioned his acceptance of campaign contributions from the gambling industry, saying there would be "consequences" if the couple did not respond. Jonathan and Anna Bartha wrote a letter printed in the Aug. 24 Woodmen Edition, a community newspaper. The couple raised concerns about Lamborn's receipt of $1,000 from International Game Technology PAC and a $500 contribution last summer from Marc Murphy, an executive of Bronco Billy's Casino in Cripple Creek. IGT makes gambling equipment. Jonathan Bartha, 34, is employed by Focus on the...

You've got to hand it to Jeff Crank. It's a gutsy publicity stunt, even in conservative El Paso County, to launch a "Stand by the President Campaign" —when 32 percent of the American public currently approve of the job George Bush is doing. But somebody must have thought it was a good idea, and so last week Crank, who is running for Congress, announced his "Stand-by" campaign, complete with a Web site featuring a photo of him and his wife standing next to President Bush and the First Lady.

Colorado Springs – Today Jeff Crank, candidate for Congress in Colorado’s 5th District, launched his “Stand by the President Campaign” and continued to pledge his support to the President’s efforts to fight the War on Terror. “No issue is more important to America today than fighting the War on Terror and giving our military the resources they need to effectively defeat this insidious enemy with the fewest number of American casualties possible,” said Jeff Crank. “By standing by our Commander in Chief and the mission he leads in Iraq, we stand by the men and women of our military and...

If there is one issue that the six Republicans and one Democrat running for Congress agree on, it is the need to reform the federal budget and cut government spending. The question is how to do it. Each candidate seeking to replace retiring GOP 5th Congressional District Rep. Joel Hefley has criticized the cost of government. Republican Jeff Crank last week laid out the first extensive budget reform and spending plan. Some themes emerge when the candidates discuss the subject. Everyone — including Democrat Jay Fawcett — backs a balanced budget amendment, and everyone thinks there are at least some...

Jeff Crank won the first battle of what may still be a sixway war for the open 5th Congressional District seat Friday, winning top-line designation on the Aug. 8 Republican primary ballot. Crank, a former Greater Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce vice president, gathered 46 percent of votes from delegates at the district assembly in Colorado Springs. Sen. Doug Lamborn, R-Colorado Springs, won 40 percent, former El Paso County Sheriff John Anderson 13 percent and businessman Patrick Carter 1 percent. A fifth announced candidate, A.J. Towne, did not show up Friday. By getting more than 30 percent of the delegates,...
