OTTAWA – Iran's regime has condemned a film that sold out its Ottawa premiere last weekend. A spokesman for Iran's foreign ministry says the documentary Iranium shows Western countries will do anything to hurt its nuclear activities. The American-made documentary, which looks at Iran's nuclear program, finally screened Sunday in Ottawa at Library and Archives Canada. The library had cancelled the screening twice after complaints from the Iranian Embassy and threats of protests. Canadian Heritage Minister James Moore had to order the library to let the screening go ahead. "It's a victory for free expression,” Moore said Sunday before the...

Last week, Canada’s Free Thinking Film Society – love that name – was scheduled to screen Iranium, a new documentary about the regime that has ruled Iran since 1979, its drive to acquire nuclear weapons and the dangers that poses for the West. But then the Iranian embassy complained and – coincidently – threats and “suspicious letters” were received at the National Archives in Ottawa, where the event was to take place. The Archives cancelled the screening and shut the building. Archives spokeswoman Pauline Portelance explained: “We deemed the risk associated with the event was a little too high.” Apparently,...

The Library and Archives of Canada will hold a February screening of the film "Iranium," an expose of the dangers posed by Iran's nuclear program, despite cancelling a planned screening in January, the film's promoters said Sunday. An exclusive pre-release screening of Iranium, scheduled to take place Tuesday night January 18 at the Library and Archives of Canada (LAC) in Ottawa, was cancelled following complaints and threats, some of which apparently came directly from the Iranian Embassy in Canada.

A scheduled screening of a controversial new documentary in Canada has reportedly caused threats of violence, protests, and even a request from the Iranian embassy for its cancellation. The Free Thinking Film Society of Ottawa, which shows films with a “healthy and patriotic respect for Western culture and traditions,” had planned on showing Iranium to an audience at the Canadian National Archives on Tuesday evening followed by a special appearance by Middle East expert Clare Lopez, who appears in the film. Iranium addresses the dangers posed by a nuclear Iran and is scheduled to premier on February 8. However, the...

Heritage Minister James Moore has instructed Library and Archives Canada to show the documentary film Iranium after “threats of violence” caused a screening of the film Tuesday to be cancelled, the minister’s office has announced. Both Mr. Moore and Immigration Minister Jason Kenney had earlier criticized Library and Archives, a federal Crown agency, for cancelling the screening. “The principle of free speech is one of the cornerstones of our democracy,” MR. Moore’s office said in a prepared statement. “Minister Moore took action as soon as he heard that the film was cancelled. The minister has instructed the Library and Archives...

OTTAWA - Iran has something to say about free speech in Canada. The country's embassy in Ottawa tried to censor a documentary on its totalitarian regime that was set to be screened at Canada's national library Tuesday night. Library and Archives Canada tried to cancel the screening after the embassy complained about the event being put on by the Free Thinking Film Society, which paid to rent a theatre in the building. The movie will go ahead after Heritage Minister James Moore intervened, a spokesman for Moore confirmed. Fred Litwin, who runs the society, says the library called Monday --...
