After watching this NIST video, I feel a lot better about the benefits of having all my personal business tied together through a government-administered national internet ID program. We'll all be able to finally get rid of the frustrating inconvenience of forgetting passwords, and replace it with a totalitarian dictatorship that knows our every move. Sounds like a reasonable deal to me. Besides, when the econazi internationalist police state finally starts getting their gulag program off the ground, I sure wouldn't want the authorities to not know where to find me. And I sure wouldn't worry about the security of...

The Obama administration said today that it's moving ahead with a plan for broad adoption of Internet IDs despite concerns about identity centralization, and hopes to fund pilot projects next year. A 55-page document (PDF) released by the White House today adds a few more details to the proposal, which still remains mostly hazy and inchoate. It offers examples of what the White House views as an "identity ecosystem," including obtaining a digital ID from an Internet service provider that could be used to view your personal health information, or obtaining an ID linked to your cell phone that would...

Federalized security screening at airports has been such a success that President Obama wants to apply the same government "expertise" to the realm of online commerce and commentary. The White House cybersecurity adviser joined Commerce Secretary Gary Locke on Jan. 7 to announce what amounts to a national ID card for the Internet. Their plan is straightforward. Instead of logging onto Facebook or one's bank using separate passwords established with each individual company or website, the White House will take the lead in developing what it calls an "identity ecosystem" that will centralize personal information and credentials. This government-approved system...

The Obama administration is planning on handing over power to the U.S. Commerce department in a new effort to increase security on the Internet. The idea is to create an "identity ecosystem" for the Internet, while the government says this is not a "National ID Card" it does appear to be very similar but restricted only to Internet activities. According to CBSnews.com, "We are not talking about a national ID card, we are not talking about a government-controlled system. What we are talking about is enhancing online security and privacy; reducing and perhaps even eliminating the need to memorize a...
