On September 21, 1964, a student demonstration occurred on the campus of the University of California at Berkeley. Thereafter other and more serious demonstrations followed until it finally became necessary for the governor to summon officers to clear the administration building on the campus of more than 800 defiant students who had entered and staged a sit-in demonstration.
