I am doing research on bear attacks. A significant number happen on the Island of Hokkaido in Japan. The number of fatal attacks varies, usually between 0-4 in the last few years. I have numbers for 2018, 2019, and 2020. I need them for 2016, 2017, and 2021. Japanese authorities started tracking bear attacks a number of years ago, so the data is there. Finding it is the problem. Bear attacks in Japan are much better covered there than in the international press. Any help would be appreciated.

On the most northern Island of Japan, Hokkaido, enormous brown bears are thriving. The population has more than doubled to about 12,000 since 1990.The bears are a closely related subspecies of brown/grizzly bears. Because they live in a similar environment to Kodiak Island, the bears are similar in size to the enormous Kodiak bears. The bear population in the Shirtoko National Park is said to be one of the highest concentrations of bears in the world. Because of the increasing population of bears, the number of people injured or killed by the bears has been increasing and is similar to...

Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido is home to about 5 million people. When the coronavirus began spreading around the world in February, Hokkaido was the first place in Japan to declare a state of emergency. And that early decision appeared to work. The number of new cases dropped and the emergency order was lifted. When the emergency ended, Hokkaido Gov. Naomichi Suzuki said, “There was no surge of infected patients that led to the collapse of the medical environment. We overcame without the fearful circumstance.”In essence, Hokkaido had flattened the curve without overwhelming the health system. The emergency was...

Russia and Japan discuss bridge across 28 miles of sea Tom Parfitt, Moscow September 6 2017, 5:00pm, The Times Russia and Japan are in “serious discussions” to link the two countries via a bridge that could allow rail travel all the way from London to Tokyo. The proposed 28-mile bridge would join Cape Crillon on the Russian island of Sakhalin to Cape SÅya at the northern tip of JapanÂ’s Hokkaido island. A shorter bridge or tunnel that has been mooted from Khabarovsk region on the Russian mainland to Sakhalin would eventually allow an uninterrupted rail journey of about 6,000 miles...

Russia’s Gazprom PJSC isn’t confident in Japan’s future as a growing natural gas user, which may damp prospects of a proposed pipeline between the countries as Premier Shinzo Abe travels to Moscow later this month. [snip] Abe, seeking to deepen economic ties with Russia in an effort to resolve a 70-year-old dispute over islands off Hokkaido, is set to visit Moscow on April 27. Russian gas supplies to Japan, including the possible pipeline between the nations, could be discussed during the visit, Russia’s Kommersant newspaper reported last month. [snip] Russia has turned to Asia as a growth market for its...

Human flesh and hair have been found inside the stomach of a bear thought to have killed at least one person in Japan. Locals have been warned to stay away from the mountainous Akita region after the body of a badly mauled woman was found last week. Last month three men in their sixties and seventies also died in apparent attacks while harvesting bamboo in a mountain forest. Bear attacks on humans in the region are not unusual - but fatal ones are. Local vet Takeshi Komatsu said it was possible the bear may have "got a taste for human...

Tokyo (AFP) - Japan has lodged a protest with Russia after scrambling four jet fighters to intercept a foreign aircraft -- believed to be Russian -- which briefly violated its airspace, officials said Wednesday. The foreign ministry made the protest shortly after the plane entered Japanese airspace off the northernmost main island of Hokkaido, near a disputed island chain, on Tuesday afternoon.

Japanese news today over here (newspapers above the fold, magazines, non-stop TV networks) are filled to the brim with news of Mr. Obama's humiliating defeat at the hands of the Republicans. Many of this is bringing Japanese up to speed as to how unpopular Mr. Obama really is, as for the last two years by and large they perpetuated the image of him being successful and popular (mostly in order to sell books and English instruction tapes using his speeches). What a rude awakening.Well, my favorite title is from this morning's Hokkaido Shimbun: Essentially: "Obama Agenda For "Change" Delivered Strong...

Ancient DNA recovered from 16 Jomon skeletons excavated from Funadomari site, Hokkaido, Japan was analyzed to elucidate the genealogy of the early settlers of the Japanese archipelago. Both the control and coding regions of their mitochondrial DNA were analyzed in detail, and we could securely assign 14 mtDNAs to relevant haplogroups. Haplogroups D1a, M7a, and N9b were observed in these individuals, and N9b was by far the most predominant. The fact that haplogroups N9b and M7a were observed in Hokkaido Jomons bore out the hypothesis that these haplogroups are the (pre-) Jomon contribution to the modern Japanese mtDNA pool. Moreover,...

Tony Blair's flagship promise of more aid for Africa, secured at the Gleneagles summit three years ago, is being pulled apart as "backsliding" leaders assemble for a G8 meeting in Japan. On the opening day of the gathering on Japan's island of Hokkaido, a draft communiqué prepared for leaders of the world's eight richest nations showed how the pledge which Mr Blair negotiated with such fanfare was being steadily watered down. The central promise made by G8 countries at Gleneagles, as rock concerts and demonstrations took place across the world, was to raise their aid budgets by £25 billion by...

Russia fires on Japanese boat, one dead A Japanese fisherman died after a Russian border patrol boat fired on a fishing boat east of Japan's northernmost main island of Hokkaido, Japanese Coast Guard officials said on Wednesday. Tokyo was likely to protest the "excessive use of force" once the circumstances had been clarified, a government source said. Fishing disputes are common in the area, and Russian border patrols often try to capture Japanese fishermen. But the last time a Japanese fisherman was shot dead by a Soviet vessel was nearly 50 years ago, in October 1956, Japanese officials said. "Seizures...

Scientists Create Crystal Möbius Strip A signature of arts and crafts sessions, the Möbius strip--a seemingly endless ribbon with only one side and one edge that can be made from construction paper and sticky tape--has been given a new look. According to a report published today in the journal Nature, scientists have succeeded in growing crystals in the form of Möbius structures. A piece of ribbon or paper can be twisted and turned easily, so a regular Möbius strip itself is no great feat of engineering. Crystals, in contrast, contain an inherently rigid structure. To manufacture their miniature Möbius strips,...
