A couple of months ago, I described why I felt that in the war to win hearts and minds, we should engage in the propagandizing of the term hirabah over jihad, when referring to the ideological movement of the radical fundamentalists who wish to war with the West and the rest. This isn't about "appeasing" the multiculturalists by not labeling and identifying the enemy; or a refusal to call them who they are, because of misguided political correctness in not wanting to "offend" anyone. That’s the question I was asking myself after listening to this interesting Oct. 30 segment on NPR’s All things Considered. The segment profiles Islamic history expert Douglas Streusand, who last year wrote a paper for the Pentagon in which...

Loosely Interpreted Arabic Terms Can Promote Enemy Ideology By Jim GaramoneAmerican Forces Press Service BAGHDAD, June 22, 2006 – The pen is mightier than the sword, and sometimes in the war of words we unwittingly give the advantage to the enemy. In dealing with Islamic extremists, the West may be giving them the advantage due to cultural ignorance, maintain Dr. Douglas E. Streusand and Army Lt. Col. Harry D. Tunnell IV. The men work at the National Defense University at Fort Lesley J. McNair in Washington, D.C. The two believe the right words can help fight the global war...

Coverage of Islam : How the press misleads the public about agression in Islam June 2, 2005 MIM: How the press dangerously misleads the public about the true nature of Islam. Coverage of Islamby Marvin Olaskyhttp://www.leaderu.com/popculture/coveringislam.htmlMany newspapers and magazines offered crash courses in the basics of Islam following the destruction of the World Trade Center towers, and WORLD went deeper in a special issue the month after 9/11. Sadly, newspaper presentation of the basics was generally done in the context of stories that advocated the positive, toleration, without coming to grips with the negative, the existence for centuries of a...
