A former commander of U.S. nuclear forces is leading a call for taking U.S. and Russian nuclear missiles off high alert, arguing that keeping them less ready for prompt launch would reduce the risk of miscalculation in a crisis. It also could keep a possible cyberattack from starting a nuclear war, he said, although neither Washington nor Moscow appears interested in negotiating an agreement to end the practice of keeping nuclear missiles on high alert. Retired Gen. James Cartwright said in an interview that “de-alerting” nuclear arsenals could foil cyber intruders by reducing the chance of firing a weapon in...

(IsraelNN.com) Acting on credible intelligence community warnings, Israel is on alert against a possible al-Qaeda attack using non-Arab terrorists. The move follows a 9/11 anniversary video in which acting al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahri warns Israel may be among the terror organization’s next targets. The terror attack in Mike’s Pub in Tel Aviv, in 2003, was carried out by two terrorists who had little difficulty entering the country, using their British passports. Security agencies are now looking at such a scenario as being more likely than Arab terrorists seeking to strike out at an Israeli target. April 30, 2003 – A...

Britain is put on high alert for lone terrorists By John Steele, Crime Correspondent (Filed: 07/09/2002) Lone terrorists who want to exploit the anniversary of the September 11 hijacks by attacking British targets are being seen as a significant potential threat, intelligence chiefs have warned.
