They were among thousands of tourists on Ocracoke and Hatteras islands who have been ordered to pack up and evacuate after a major power outage early Thursday. A transmission line was cut during construction work on a bridge, knocking out electricity to the two tourist meccas. "We were all upset," said Bruhl, 22, of Shepherdstown, West Virginia, who left Ocracoke by...

A NOAA-led research mission has located and identified the final resting place of the YP-389, a U.S. Navy patrol boat sunk approximately 20 miles off the coast of Cape Hatteras, NC, by a German submarine during World War II. Six sailors died in the attack on June 19, 1942. There were 18 survivors. The wreck is located in about 300 feet of water in a region off North Carolina known as the “Graveyard of the Atlantic,” home to U.S. and British naval vessels, merchant ships, and German U-boats sunk during the Battle of the Atlantic. NOAA and its expedition partners...

Hatteras Island is famous for its shipwrecks. But Thursday locals experienced their first ever "chip-wreck". A cargo container loaded with thousands of bags of Doritos Tortilla Chips washed ashore on the beach near Frisco and broke open. The container apparently fell off a ship. The chips scattered for about a half a mile, and some even floated as far north as the Bonner bridge. Arley Spake photographed the broken container. Spake works for Frito-Lay, the company that makes Doritos. His wife Janice joined him at water's edge. "It was really weird," said Spake. (Arley) was taking pictures for Frito-Lay, we...

BUXTON - The Coast Guard has decided to stop spending money to protect its station at Cape Hatteras after winter storms wiped out a 12-foot sand dune and brought the surf within 150 feet of the installation. No date has been set to relocate the facility, but plans have accelerated to move the 57 employees. About a decade ago, the Coast Guard spent $8.3 million to build 23 new housing units at the station, which is administrative headquarters for life saving stations along the Outer Banks. Erosion along the beach has flooded the station’s sewage treatment plant and some structures...

As Hurricane Isabel tore through Eastern North Carolina, it picked on some of North Carolina's most vulnerable areas: the fragile Outer Banks and the largely poor, rural northeast corner. Now, the state and its residents are trying to figure out how to fix crumbled roads, broken power lines and waterlogged houses. By Friday night, three people were known to have died in the storm. An estimated 283,000 were without power, down from a high of 700,000, and 70,000 had no phone service. In the northeast, the lights might not be back on for as long as two weeks, utility officials...
