<p>An Israeli hospital worker is vaccinated last week.</p> <p>September 24, 2002 -- WASHINGTON - Federal officials sent states detailed guidelines yesterday for rapidly vaccinating their entire populations against smallpox should the deadly disease return through an act of terrorism.</p> <p>It's been decades since smallpox was seen in this country and the disease has been eradicated from Earth, so officials would assume that a single case of smallpox means the nation is under attack.</p>

Several U.S. military personnel who received a smallpox vaccination died from heart inflammation while others had not recovered from the same inflammation years after first experiencing the condition, an in-depth review of medical records has found. Autopsies of two male military members in their 20s who suddenly died uncovered heart inflammation, or myocarditis. There were also signs that heart inflammation contributed to two additional deaths, one an 18-year-old male and the other a 23-year-old female. New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof is considering a run to become Oregon’s next governor – and is reaching out to “high-level Democrats” on who could possibly work on his campaign, according to a report Friday.
