One in three employees admits they have been to work with a hangover and more than one in 10 has been drunk at their desk, a study suggests. Staff said they made mistakes, struggled to concentrate and had to go home early as a result of drinking. Four out of five employers say alcohol is the biggest threat to the well-being of their staff, according to a survey for Norwich Union Healthcare. The only way to avoid a hangover at Christmas is to stay sober. Researchers who examined eight trials of traditional hangover remedies found there was no clear proof any worked. Researchers said: "No compelling evidence exists to suggest that any conventional or complementary intervention is effective for preventing or treating alcohol hangover. "The most effective way to avoid the symptoms of alcohol-induced hangover is to practise abstinence or moderation." FORGET aspirins, hairs of dogs and hot baths, the only sure way of avoiding a hangover is not to drink in the first place, according to a new study. For those who indulge in a little too much of the grape, a botanical cousin, the prickly pear fruit, may be able to ease the aftereffects. Researchers have found that extracts from the skin of the prickly pear seem to help with the medical condition veisalgia - far better known as a hangover.
