Attention: Someone Claims to Have Finally Made Hangover-Free Beer

Beer is completely delicious and refreshing – regardless of the season.

After a long day at work, what could be better than settling down in your local pub with a few pints of cold lager?

When are the best times to go to the supermarket to get reduced items?

However, many of us soon regret it when on waking the next day for work, we feel like our soul has been ripped out and s**t upon.

Well potentially, not anymore.

In what could possible be life-changing news, someone claims to have finally created the formula for hangover-free beer.

Thomas Gesink, a Dutch beer maker, says that he’s cracked the code for brewing beer which gets people drunk but doesn’t leave them cowering in a dark corner the next morning.

As you might expect, large parts of this potentially explosive recipe are being kept under-wraps to avoid other breweries ripping him off.

But Thomas has released a few ingredients to give the public an idea of how the beer works and tastes.

It all started when the De Prael brewery in Amsterdam was challenged to create a tipple that reduced the effect of a hangover.

‘It’s a pilsner-style beer with 4.5% alcohol, but we researched what we needed to add to make for a lighter hangover the next day,’ says Thomas.

Hangover-busting beer ingredients:

Vitamin B12 – ‘also found in paracetamol’
Willow fibres – ‘cleansing effect’
Sea salts – ‘to keep the body from dehydrating’
Ginger – ‘protects against sickness’

Despite the sea salt (the beer is said not to be salty at all) and the other odd ingredients apparently only leave a trace of taste.

And those drinking it seem to enjoy it.

‘It is malty, delicious. Different from a normal larger beer – it has much more character,’ says one customer.

So, how effective is it really?

Thomas says that despite it ‘working like a charm’, it still contains alcohol so if you down pint after pint of the stuff, you’ll still feel pretty wretched when you wake up. But, he says that four or five beers will leave you feeling fresh in the morning.

Stu Lascelles, director of the East London Brewing Company, tells Metro.co.uk that from an academic view point, at least, De Prael has ‘thought about what happens to the body when you drink alcohol and added things they know, or are reputed, to counteract hangovers’.

He says that the odd-sounding ingredients are actually pretty traditional, with sea salt having been used to ‘great effect in several beers in recent years’.

But…does Stu think the beer is genuinely hangover-free?

‘Maybe, but probably not any more than drinking responsibly and alternating beers with glasses of water would,’ he says.

‘A hangover is made up of many things, including: dehydration, interrupted sleep, metabolic changed, and most importantly, acetaldehyde accumulation.

‘The latter is an initial breakdown product as your liver cleans alcohol out of your blood, and takes a while to further be cleaned from the body. It is toxic.

‘Also, the brewers themselves say that drinking a lot of the beer will of course result in a hangover.’

But nevertheless, four pints without a headache is a step in the right direction.

Alas, the beer is only for sale at the De Prael brewery where it’s only available on draft.

Like Amsterdam needed more reasons for visiting.

The only time I had a hangover from beer was the time in college I drank ten in one hour. Learned my lesson.

I don’t get hangovers... My secret... Just stay drunk. It’s the most enjoyable cure I know and it’s been working very well for the past 30 years.

Ummm...in my estimation, what would be better than settling down in my local pub with a few pints of cold lager...is to settle down in my own abode with a few pints of properly chilled ale. Something like...

Maybe even alternating with a few of these;
