All hangover cures 'useless'
Herald Sun ^ | 22 December 2005

FORGET aspirins, hairs of dogs and hot baths, the only sure way of avoiding a hangover is not to drink in the first place, according to a new study.

Researchers led by Max Pittler of the Peninsular Medical School at Exeter University, surfed the Internet and combed medical databases to study a range of hangover cures from the traditional to the novel. Their research roamed from the humble aspirin to fructose, artichokes and even prickly pears but found no silver bullet.

However, they did hold out some hope for the potential of borage, a bright blue herb with star-shaped flowers used traditionally to decorate gin-based summer cocktails.

But their conclusions were sobering.

"No compelling evidence exists to suggest that any complementary or conventional intervention is effective for treating or preventing alcohol hangover," they wrote in the British Medical Journal.

"The most effective way to avoid the symptoms of alcohol-induced hangover is thus to practise abstinence or moderation."

Abstinence or moderation? These jokers have obviously never been to Australia.

Either abstinence or moderation will work.

Stumble down drunks are out of luck. Plus this kills off oodles of brain cells.

I could have bought lots of beer with the money they wasted on this study!

I couldn't help but notice that RU-21 is conspicuous by its absence among the 'cures' they tested out. I wonder if their study covered it, too?

A greasy McDonald's breakfast sandwich is the difference between life and death many mornings.

Cranberry juice mixed with 7-Up. Replaces lost fluids without making you heave.

Nonsense

a couple of glasses of water before you go to bed and then eat some fruit in the morning, preferable watermelon or cantalope (waterfilled fruit) and the hangover will be either weak or nonexistence.

Doesn't work if you've passed out drunk...you're too far gone by then.

Absolutely correct. Forcing oneself to drink a couple glasses of water before bed works like a charm every time.

Yes definitely water...plus vitamin C and Vitamin B tablets you will wake up like its a normal day. The problem is most of the time I get in so late I just hit the bed and forget all about the possible hangover the next day..

Interestingly as a result I just bought "Chaser" last weekend after a hangover and tried it out on Saturday night (its tablets that are taken while you drink)..I guess it worked fine but I kind of took it easy that night so it is hard to tell..The vitamins and water are certainly more economical..Chaser was 6.99 for 10 tablets and you can take anywhere from 4-6 per night!!

Don't drink the cheap stuff and remember to keep hydrated. Also, if you know you've really overdone the drinking, you might as well force yourself to puke before bed (beats waking up to do it).

A Macca's breakfast is THE hangover cure!!!

Two Sausage McMuffins With Egg. Discard the top muffin on each sandwich. Eat one, followed by half a medium Diet Pepsi. Eat the other, swill the remainder of the Pepsi. Ahhhh..... better.

For some of us, that type of breakfast would be the death of us, no matter what we drank the night before...

It's good to make your last one a big old glass of water, as a hangover prevention. There is no cure.

Come to think of it, toast with Vegemite liberally applied is also very good.

It can also be the only sure way of avoiding STDs. ;')

Sometime ago, I was informed that alchohol saps you of water-soluble vitamins, minerals, and needed electrolytes. I heard the hangover is simply the body needing water and a dose of the same suppliments that athletes take after a hard work out, particularly electrolytes, B and C vitamins. Don't know if it is 100% foolproof formula but coincidentally I knew a real lush when I was younger. He used to wake up after drinking all night, open a can of beer and pop a B complex and 2 Cs. He had no hangover, though he belched from the B.

So, perhaps the secret to hangovers is to drink water before drinking alchohol. Don't binge drink or drink too quickly. Try to drink with a meal so the alchohol is absorbed. And take a multi or B-complex with water or a small glass of gatorade the next day.

For me, I stopped hanging out with drunkards and getting drunk myself. This method cured my hangovers, avoided theirs, and as an added bonus killed most foolish behavior in my life.

If you get up AFTER breakfast is being served; go for a bacon double cheese burger with barbeque sauce from Burger King. My favorite hangover meal.
