Here’s a guide for everything you need to know about COVID-19 — from variant- and case-tracking to the most up-to-date public health recommendations. Variants What COVID variant is dominant right now? HV.1 now accounts for nearly a third of cases nationwide — more than any other variant in the U.S. A member of the Omicron family of COVID variants, HV.1 was first detected over the summer and appears to share many of the symptoms we’ve come to know from other variants, including fever, cough, stuffy or runny nose, sore throat and loss of taste or smell. EG.5, nicknamed Eris, has...

The Biden-Harris reelection campaign shared a "handy guide for responding to crazy MAGA nonsense" for supporters heading into the holidays with Trump supporting family members. The guide shared talking points to respond to conservative rhetoric about subjects from immigration to the economy. One slide included responses to when someone claims "Trump secured our border!" to reply with a "No he didn’t," followed by claims that "All he did was separate families, put children in cages, and leave behind a broken immigration system for Joe Biden to clean up." Critics across social media shredded the list of talking points, arguing it...

In academia, there have been growing controversies over language guides and usages, including the use of pronouns that some object to as matters of religion or grammar. Now the largest association of science teachers in the world has issued a guide for “anti-oppression” terminology for science teachers. In the guide, titled “Gender-Inclusive Biology: A framework in action,” the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) has called for “gender-inclusive biology,” which includes the abandonment of terms like “parent,” “men,” “women,” “mother,” and “father.” Under the guide, mothers are now referred to as “persons with ovaries” in reference to reproduction cycles while fathers...

It seems like this Christmas is all Krampus and no St. Nick. People are in a foul mood, and politically it seems every day brings little offerings from the Caga Tió — from failed legislative measures to calls for packing institutions or sacking individuals in righteous indignation. Indeed, if you expect your holiday events are going to be an emotional powder keg, just think of dinner for Justice Sonia Sotomayor with the three newest justices after she said a “stench” of politics followed them to the Court. Then there is the happy gathering of the Democrats with senators like Joe...

The grizzly was killed Friday after it charged a group of seven game wardens and other personnel as they approached the scene of the attack. Several people fired at the animal and it died about 20 yards (18 meters) from the group, Jacobsen said. Officials said they are confident...

A new book paints a sobering picture of the future for young fans of socialism. Socialism is all the rage among young Americans these days. Not the kind of socialism that has never worked anywhere in history. Not the kind that drove Venezuela from South America’s most prosperous economy into a failed state in a mere two decades. Not the kind that wreaked essentially the same havoc upon once-thriving Cuba. Not those real-world examples, but the new-and-improved, democratic socialism, which, as MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle recently assured viewers, is “a lot different” from those other forms of socialism. Those young Americans...

Immigrants who settle in Quebec City are being offered a new guide to explain local customs, and the authors spare no detail in telling the newcomers how to fit in – for example, refrain from committing incest, wash with soap and use underarm deodorant to "control perspiration and bad odours." The guide from city hall was made public last week and has already been condemned as insulting and paternalistic. ..... Quebec City is one of 13 municipalities across Quebec designated by the province to settle refugees from Syria. While Montreal remains the overwhelming destination of choice for newcomers, more than...

I caught only parts of Sean Hannity's show yesterday. In one of the parts I caught, he said that the race is closest in three states: Nevada, Florida, and North Carolina. I can't speak to Nevada, but I have corresponded with bishops in Florida and North Carolina. These are two states where the bishops maintain their rigid silence and won't speak out against the sponsors of the Culture of Death: the Democratic Party. Want to help? See if you can get a flyer included in your Church bulletin to educate the flocks. For Catholics: Catholic Flyer For Other Christians: Other...

As I’ve mentioned in previous posts over the years, while I’m not the handiest or craftiest guy, I do make an effort to expand my DIY skills when I can. One thing that often leaves me scratching my head is purchasing lumber whenever I take on a project that requires it. You’d think lumber would be simple; it’s just going and buying a piece of wood, right? But it’s surprisingly complex. There are so many choices that, even with a supply list in hand, I often find myself wandering the lumber section at the home improvement store for 20 minutes...

(Reuters) - Following are main findings by the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in a report on Sunday saying that time is running out to keep global warming within agreed limits. The 33-page summary, by leading scientists, is meant to guide almost 200 governments which have promised to work out a deal by the end of 2015 to slow climate change. Nations have promised to limit warming to a maximum 2 degrees Celsius (3.6F) above pre-industrial times, seen as a threshold for more heat waves, droughts and rising seas - temperatures have already risen about 0.8C (1.4F).
