The explosion took place over a Halal grocery in a portion of the city dominated by Arab immigrants: Ismail Adan, 34, has lived in the building since 2002 and left shortly before the fire. He said his mother had called him early in the morning and he left to visit her, but a cousin who was staying with him was in the third-floor apartment when the explosion occurred. He said the cousin leapt from the window and was injured but he has spoken with him in the hospital. “He’s OK. It’s not very serious,” Adan said.

Chances are that you have never set foot inside the best grocery store in America: Aldi. And even if you are lucky enough to be in one of the 32 states where Aldi is, perhaps you were put-off by the cardboard boxes in lieu of shelves, or the row upon row of suspicious-looking off-brands. What is this place? Why do I have to put down a deposit to check out a cart? What is the weird giant shelf by the exit? And what do you mean, I have to pay for a bag? Calm your hormones, meine Schatzis: Aldi, which...

As Wal-Mart and other supermarket chains follow the high-end grocer's lead and promote local produce, farmers are becoming the new American idols After being pushed out of the spotlight for years, the local farmer is emerging as a new celebrity. From the foothills of Maine, through North Carolina in the South, the plains of Idaho, and the lush green valleys of California, a movement to celebrate the local farmer is sweeping the country. At the forefront of the movement has been supermarket Whole Foods (WFMI), which for years has put up photos of local farmers in its stores promoting their...

Albertson's Johnston Gets a Hefty Pay Package: Graef Crystal May 26 (Bloomberg) -- While he's trying to cut the pay of his supermarket clerks and other workers, Lawrence Johnston, the chief executive officer of Albertson's Inc., the third-biggest U.S. grocer, seems to have forgotten to trim some other costs -- most notably his own bloated pay package and those of his top subordinates. There's some irony here, because the criticism of a number of large institutional investors has been aimed, not at the Boise, Idaho-based Albertson's, but, rather, at Safeway Inc., the second-biggest U.S. food retailer in net sales.
