Saying the ailing economy is putting enough stress on taxpayers, Senate Republican leader Dave Cogdill said Tuesday that Republicans will oppose any tax hikes to bridge California's budget deficit. In a hotly worded letter to Assembly Speaker Fabian Nuñez, a top Republican lawmaker is urging the creation of a bipartisan committee to investigate whether Kevin Shelley knowingly funneled taxpayer money into his successful 2002 campaign for California secretary of state.
