Francis Pryor examines the relics of the Dark Ages to build a fuller picture of this much-maligned era. Popular belief has always held that the departure of the Romans led to barbarism in Britain, but archaeological finds have shed light on a cultured, literate society that embraced the growing Romanised Christian religion and embarked on a profitable trading relationship with the Byzantine Empire.Sheep-farming archaeologist, Francis Pryor, presents a brand new historical series which explores Britain A.D, the British national character and the ultimate British icon King Arthur.Finding new and previously unexplained evidence, Francis Pryor overturns the idea that Britain reverted...

GENEVA — Katy Goodrich is straight. But finding out four years ago that her brother is not was enough to prompt her to do whatever she could to support the gay movement. “I’m sure he would do it for me, too,” said the William Smith College sophomore who organized a same-sex holding hands day Thursday at the Colleges. Goodrich, who chairs the campus’ PRIDE Alliance (People Respecting Individual Differences in Everyone), said the event was meant to show people of all sexual orientations that their peers accept them for who they are. Like Goodrich, most of the 20 or 30...

GLASGOW, Mont. -- At a remote airfield in northeastern Montana, where the quiet is usually broken only by the singing of Western meadowlarks, a Boeing 777-300ER jetliner made some symbolic noise of its own Wednesday. But it was the lack of noise from the big plane that will help advance aviation. The Boeing Co. and some of its partners, including NASA, are testing new methods and technology that can make commercial jetliners quieter when landing and taking off -- a growing concern at airports from Sea-Tac to Singapore and Paris. Passengers also will benefit from the ongoing efforts as cabin...

Another bureaucratic bright light getting a big raise is Lt. Gov. Catherine Baker Knoll. This ditz went uninvited to the funeral of Marine Staff Sgt. Joseph Goodrich, 32, of Pittsburgh who died July 10 in Iraq. She sat next to a family member, asked who she was, then handed her a business card remarking that the government is against the war. Nothing like using a U.S. Marine's funeral as a campaign stop. I'm not sure how much of a pay hike Mrs. Knoll's is getting. Do you think she deserves it? *** Fast Eddie, by the way, defended Mrs. Knoll,...

Rendell sticking with Knoll Governor waves off missteps, malaprops in saying she'll be his running mate in '06 Wednesday, July 27, 2005 By Tom Barnes, Post-Gazette Harrisburg Bureau HARRISBURG -- Even though Lt. Gov. Catherine Baker Knoll makes occasional malaprops and mistakes in judgment, Gov. Ed Rendell says he'll stick with her when he runs for re-election next year. Asked yesterday if she'll be his running mate on the Democratic ticket in 2006, Rendell said, "I have no reason to expect differently." Rendell told a state Capitol news conference that as lieutenant governor, Knoll takes her job seriously and "has...

"Lt. Gov. Catherine Baker Knoll apologized Monday to the family of a Marine killed in Iraq for showing up uninvited for his funeral last week and giving out a business card. Knoll went to the funeral of Staff Sgt. Joseph Goodrich and family members said she told his aunt that 'our government' was opposed to the war." What is missing from this article?Notice that there is not a single mention of the fact that Lt. Governor Catherine Baker Knoll is a DEMOCRAT in the AP article posted on CNN. You can bet if a Republican politician publicly screwed up like...

Written apologies will be sent to a fallen Marine's relatives angered by Lt. Gov. Catherine Baker Knoll's uninvited appearance at the soldier's funeral and her criticism of the war in Iraq, Gov. Ed Rendell said Sunday. Rendell said he will send a personal letter to the family of the late Marine Staff Sgt. Joseph Goodrich, of Westwood, and will ask Knoll to do the same. Goodrich, 32, a police officer and infantry unit leader, died July 10 in a mortar attack in Hit, Iraq. Rendell said he hadn't spoken with Knoll about the incident, but was disturbed by the family's...

Mitch Goodrich: Christian school teacher, competitive marksman, soldier who recently returned from active duty in Afghanistan, martial artist ... and Libertarian Party member. As attempts to stereotype Libertarians have proven, generalizations are futile. It's no more reasonable to say members of the Libertarian Party are politically far right than it is to say they're far left -- although party members are frequently hit with both labels. And you can't safely say Libertarians are anti-military -- assuming the military is being used properly for national defense. In fact, there are hundreds of military personnel in the party's membership -- many of...
