The CDC says Afghanistan has the 7th highest number of measles cases in the world -------- Fort McCoy Army Base in Wisconsin identified a case of the measles this week as it brings in thousands of Afghan refugees as part of the mass evacuation effort in the wake of the Taliban takeover of Kabul. Tom Tiffany says that, of the approximately 2,000 evacuees from Afghanistan at Wisconsin’s Fort McCoy when he visited recently, “none of them were there on a special immigration visas.” He claimed that the Fort McCoy Afghan refugees are not properly vetted. He also says that the Afghan refugees are allowed to leave the base unsupervised “including without the authority of the general.” (Note: Since Tiffany’s comments on Aug. 31, the number of Afghan refugees has ballooned to 8,000. MARCH 22--After being denied a kiss yesterday by a neighbor 39 years her junior, a 92-year-old Florida woman allegedly returned to her home, retrieved a .380 semi-automatic handgun, and fired several shots into the man’s residence. Aged pistolero Helen Staudinger was arrested last night and charged with aggravated assault and firing into an occupied dwelling, according to a Marion County Sheriff’s Office report. Protecting the Fort Fort McCoy Feb 2, 2005 Congressman Ron Kind says closing Fort McCoy would be a mistake. He took that message straight to the top on Wednesday. Kind met with the Department of Defense to make the case to keep Fort McCoy open. It's on a list of bases that could be shut down by the government to save money. Kind says the numbers show that Fort McCoy is one of the best training sites in the country. The government has to make a decision by May 16th.

Fort McCoy Lightning Strike June 14, 2004 Mandy Grosser Link to story On Sunday Morning, lightning stuck a tent at the army's Fort McCoy, injuring 13 soldiers. Officials say two soldiers received medical treatment at the tent and the other eleven were taken to the hospital. Two soldiers remained in serious condition on Sunday night. Officials aren't sure how many soldiers were inside the tent when the lightning stuck. Ironically, more than 2,000 soldiers specializing in medical treatment are stationed at Fort McCoy right now. 22-year-old Army reservist who died in April may have succumbed to a combination of vaccinations, including those for smallpox and anthrax, the Pentagon said yesterday. But an Army medical expert, calling the death "a rare and tragic case," said the military's vaccination policies would not be changed.
