A flaw in Sun's Java Virtual Machine can open up the two most popular browsers, Microsoft's Internet Explorer and Mozilla's Firefox, to attack, security researchers said Tuesday. According to Reston, Vir.-based iDefense and Danish security vendor Secunia, the bug in Java 2 Runtime Environment (JRE), Standard Edition could let attackers bypass the Java security "sandbox" and all security restrictions within Java applets on Web sites. JRE is the plug-in software that establishes a connection between the browser and the Java platform, and makes it possible for Web browsers to run Java applets stashed on Web sites. Hackers using the exploit...

Linux operating-system producer Linspire Inc. has found another way to challenge Microsoft: it's offering its OpenOffice.org product suite and the Mozilla Foundation's Firefox browser in a single package in retail channels. Linspire, formerly called Lindows, positions its OOoFf package to directly compete with Microsoft Office. The OpenOffice.org product enables users to create spreadsheets, presentations, and documents using files in popular formats, including .doc, .xls and .ppt. The Linspire product also enables users to utilize the PDF format. "Our goal with OOoFf is to help get OpenOffice.org and Firefox into every possible distribution channel," said Linspire CEO Michael Robertson in a...

In the past two weeks, Internet users have downloaded over 4.5 million copies of Firefox, the excellent browser available for free from the nonprofit Mozilla Foundation. Yes, there are hundreds of millions of IE users, but Firefox is gaining fast, and IE is losing market share for the first time in years. The switch to Firefox will happen even faster as more people realize the full power of this browser, much of it provided by computer hobbyists who are scrambling to create a cornucopia of useful add-ons.

Just downloaded Firefox 1.0 and added the Bugmenot extension. Lets you read articles at NYT, LAT, ChicTrib, WashPost etc with out registering! Very Nice! I tried it at all of these sites and it worked like a charm. For those of you who dont know about BugMeNot, its a site that was set up to provide log ins and passwords for sites you have to register for, similar to the HillaryClinton/isaliar logon that was set up by FR users to avoid registration at the NYT. The browser extension links to BugMeNot and automatically fills in a log in and password...

Blake Ross is lounging at his parents' Florida Keys condo, thinking ahead to his first day back at Stanford. His goal for his sophomore year: nothing less than to "take back the Web" from Microsoft (MSFT).You might think the shy 19-year-old is outmatched. Think again. Ross, a software prodigy who interned at Netscape at age 14, is the lead architect behind Mozilla's Firefox -- a revolutionary new browser that's catching on the way Mosaic did in 1993. In beta for the past four months, Firefox version 1.0 is set to be released in November. With that, Ross will issue the...

Internet Explorer, you're fired. That should have been said a long time ago. After Microsoft cemented a monopoly of the Web-browser market, it let Internet Explorer go stale, parceling out ho-hum updates that neglected vulnerabilities routinely exploited by hostile Web sites. Not until August's Windows XP Service Pack 2 update did (some) users get any real relief.

Take a look at the search results from the new MSN Beta Search. The search for "more evil than God" reveals some odd search results.

Mozilla Firefox has Google, Yahoo and other search tools baked in, but they are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to search capabilities available with this innovative new web browser that launched its first official version today. This is part 2 of a series; click here for part 1. Firefox's search box appears just to the right of the address window. The search box is preconfigured to run searches on Google, Yahoo, Amazon, eBay and Dictionary.com. The default is Google, but you can select your search tool of choice using a drop-down menu. Want additional search engines? No...

The Mozilla Foundation today unleashed its long-awaited Firefox 1.0 web browser. The release follows hot on the heels of last month's Preview Release, which the non-profit making organisation reports has already been downloaded by over eight million people. The announcement marks the worldwide launch of Mozilla Firefox, with immediate availability for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux as a free download from Mozilla.org. The browser is currently available in over a dozen languages, with "many more on the way". "We are delighted to be announcing this major milestone for the Mozilla Foundation and for the Firefox browser, which has been...

Commentary--Firefox has been getting a lot of press lately. Firefox is free software in the Stallman-sanctioned sense--released under a GPL license and built atop technology developed for the Mozilla project. Everybody LOVES Firefox. Not only is it a great browser, but it will make your teeth whiter and secure you a date with Carmen Electra. Okay, perhaps I exaggerate, but on that note, I haven’t seen ANYONE criticize Firefox. To a certain extent, this is because it is the best alternative in a world dominated by Internet Explorer (cue Opera/Safari/Konqueror fans to go into a frothing rage). On the other...

Just wondering - has FR considered implementing an RSS feed? One that would alert to pings and mail, and maybe threads deemed important, would, I think, facilitate discussion here, without having to constantly check back.

For anyone who is interested, here's a useful (free) utility from Microsoft that integrates with IE5+. When you select text/images on a web page (as though you were going to edit/copy them) then right-click, you'll have a 'View Partial Source' option in the popup context menu. Choosing this option will show you the HTML source in notepad. I've used this for a couple years and it's VERY useful for determining the URLs of pictures you might want to link & also for answering 'how'd they do that?' if you see interesting stuff on a page. Again, free. Very fast download....

Since the recent security warnings surrounding Microsoft's Internet Explorer web browser were issued, more and more people around the world have been turning to a small Open Source alternative spawned from the developers of the Mozilla browser: Mozilla Firefox. Though it is small in download size, don't let it fool you. There's nothing small about this application. It's one hell of a contender for the Internet browser throne. Can it topple the software giants flagship product? Yes, I think it can. Sure, Internet Explorer dominates 90+ percent of the market, but I think people are starting to grow weary of...

I really hate to ask a question, but I could use some help from you Firefox experts. Just tonight my Firefox browser stopped opening URLs from FR. It stopped them as popups. I changed popup preferences to always allow www.freerepublic.com. It made no difference. It was working just fine this afternoon. IE still works properly. I would appreciate any helpful suggestions.

LONDON (Reuters) - Since Microsoft won the browser wars in the late 1990s, its Internet Explorer software has been the way most people surf the Web. But with some slick new challengers on the scene, that may be about to change. While Internet Explorer has remained largely unchanged for years, alternative Web browsers like Opera, Apple Computer's Safari and especially Firefox are wowing users with innovative features and the promise of increased protection from hackers. Firefox rose from the ashes of Netscape, the first popular Web browser, which kick-started the dot-com boom before being vanquished by Microsoft's Internet Explorer. Netscape...

People have been asking for a free republic RSS feed ( RSS FAQ ) for quite some time and while there isn't a traditional graphic there is a hidden meta tag which the new FireFox 1.0 browser discovered. Which means that if you're a newsfeed user you can finally subscribe directly to the free republic forums here: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/browse.rss
