  • These 10 essential browser tweaks fix the web’s biggest annoyances

This rusty ol’ internet of ours sure has a lot to offer, but man, oh man, can it be annoying to use. From ad-infested websites to autoplaying videos and an endless array of pop-up provocations, it’s a wonder anyone makes it through the day without going completely berserk. It doesn’t have to be that way, though. With a little fine-tuning and some carefully considered additions, surfing the web can actually become—dare I say it—almost pleasant. All it takes is about 10 minutes of your time, and your desktop browser will be loaded up, tricked out, and ready to give you...
  • Firefox turns controversial new encryption on by default in the US

    theverge.com ^ | Feb 25, 2020 | Jon Porter
Starting today, Mozilla will turn on by default DNS over HTTPS (DoH) for Firefox users in the US, the company has announced. DoH is a new standard that encrypts a part of your internet traffic that’s typically sent over an unencrypted plain text connection, and which could allow others to see what websites you’re visiting, even when your communication with the website itself is encrypted using HTTPS. Mozilla says it is the first browser to support the new standard by default, and will be rolling it out gradually over the coming weeks in order to address any unforeseen issues.Whenever you...

I have Tampermonkey installed and enabled, and I use Firefox Quantum. There are some userscripts related to Twitter that I can verify DO work correctly, such as "Dowload Twitter Videos" But the userscript I really want to get working is called "Twitter Filter" https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/34646-twitter-filter Here is some background info. -I used to have greasemonkey scripts working, but they stopped working (possibly about the same time that I installed Tampermonkey?) -So I dis-abled greasemonkey, and only have the Tampermonkey engine enabled at the moment. -There is no way in he11 I want to ever LOGIN to Twitter and use their twitter-supplied...

  • Firefox will let users delete collected data thanks to California's new privacy law

Mozilla, maker of the Firefox web browser, says it's giving all users more control of their own data. The change is spurred by the California Consumer Privacy Act, or CCPA, which went into effect Wednesday. The new data privacy law gives California residents the right to know what personal data tech companies collect. It also enables people to ask companies to delete their data and not sell it. Mozilla said changes it's making under the CCPA will apply to every Firefox user, not just those in California. In a blog post Tuesday, Mozilla said it'll give Firefox users the option...

Help! I have a three week old HP laptop that was working beautifully until the Microsoft update on 27 August 2019. Since then my browser tabs have been crashing repeatedly throughout every session, and periodically, the computer crashes too. I'm a simple user with just enough savvy to post here and build simple websites. I don't have the skills to sort this out, and need some help, please. I've already tried doing a system restore to an earlier date, but the computer keeps crashing before it completes. I've run CCleaner and Malwarebytes too many times to count. I've sent countless...
  • How to Disable Video Autoplay in Chrome and Firefox

    Make Tech Easier ^ | Nov 3, 2018 | Robert Zak
One of the annoying things correlating with an ever-faster Internet is an increase in the number of websites that deem it okay to autoplay videos (often with sound!) as soon as you land on their homepage. Sometimes the videos quietly tick away in the corner of the screen, other times they’re obnoxiously in your face, but the point is you should be able to control whether you see them or not. Both Chrome and Firefox are pretty liberal with their autoplay policies by default, so you may need to do a little tweaking to disable them. We’ll show you how...

It appears Charter is blocking Free Republic in SC. I am able to connect via my Cellphone. My final solution for a good fix: I installed SetupVPN extension in Firefox. Very easy to use, I now have access to Free Republic again. My outage started yesterday around 5 PM, still out. I had this happen once before about 5 years ago., the issue went away after a day.

I am not much of a vanity poster. This morning I have noticed that Firefox had disabled my browser extensions for Ghostery and Adblock plus. I tried to install several other adblock anti-trackers and none of them will install. I have tried to re-install them yet I am denied. I hate to wave goodbye to Firefox as I have been onboard since the Netscape days. But, I cannot get these extensions to install no matter what I do and I will dump them if they want to force the issue

  • New browser attack lets hackers run bad code even after users leave a web page

Academics from Greece have devised a new browser-based attack that can allow hackers to run malicious code inside users' browsers even after users have closed or navigated away from the web page on which they got infected This new attack, called MarioNet, opens the door for assembling giant botnets from users' browsers. These botnets can be used for in-browser crypto-mining (cryptojacking), DDoS attacks, malicious files hosting/sharing, distributed password cracking, creating proxy networks, advertising click-fraud, and traffic stats boosting, researchers said. . .

I have a question for browser-savvy FReepers. I downloaded Pale Moon, which seems to be a good browser. A lot of FReepers use it, and that is how I first heard of it. It changed the font size on my email to about 350 percent, and I cannot find a way to reduce it back to 100 percent (i.e., normal size.) Can anyone tell me how to do it? Thank you.

unless you want to loose the extensive capabilities provided via classic Firefox extensions. If you did not want to loose you extensions with the advent of (the fast but relatively handicapped) Firefox Quantum, do not update to Firefox 60 esr, which will actually be an "update" (downgrade for power users) to Quantum. Which means most of your extensions will not work, including, Tab Mix Plus 0.3.8.6 https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/tab-mix-plusReduce tab width; Enable multiple tab rows; Change how active tab looks, etc.Memory Restart https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/memory-restart/ Shows how much ram FF is using, and enables easy restart to flush memory.ColorfulTabs https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/colorfultabs/?src=search/ Make tabs distinctive. Today, we are announcing the Mozilla Information Trust Initiative (MITI)—a comprehensive effort to keep the Internet credible and healthy. Mozilla is developing products, research, and communities to battle information pollution and so-called ‘fake news’ online. And we’re seeking partners and allies to help us do so. Here’s why. Imagine this: Two news articles are shared simultaneously online. The first is a deeply reported and thoroughly fact checked story from a credible news-gathering organization. Perhaps Le Monde, the Wall Street Journal, or Süddeutsche Zeitung. The second is a false or misleading story. But the article is designed to mimic content from...
