From the 'open source goodness' files:Mozilla's Firefox 16 open source web browser is now generally available and with it comes more goodies for developers. That's right. While Firefox has long positioned itself as browser for users, the focus since moving to the rapid release train cycle has clearly shifted – towards developers. I personally think that's a good thing because it's not something that any other major browser vendor does. The Mozilla focus on developers means that developers will use Firefox more than other browsers. If developers use it more, I suppose that the prevailing notion is that they will also...

Ready or not, yet another mobile operating system is about to join the fray. Perhaps you've heard of Firefox OS, otherwise known as Boot to Gecko (B2G). Firefox OS is Mozilla's attempt to approach the mobile scene in a different way, one in which apps run in HTML5 and nothing else. Short and sweet, Mozilla wants to shake up the mobile OS scene the same way it did the browser market many years ago, and it's well on its way to doing that. Sprint is reportedly on board to support Firefox OS, and so is Deutsche Telekom, parent company of...

Mozilla has been waging a multi-year battle against memory bloat in its open source Firefox web browser. With today's Firefox 15 release, Mozilla is firing a major salvo in that battle, claiming a reduction in memory usage. The memory reduction comes by way of plugging memory links in the way that third party add-ons consume memory. In a blog post detailing the memory fix, Mozilla developers estimated that the memory improvement could be as much as a 4.8x improvement over the previous Firefox 14 release.Tablets Perhaps even more interesting then simply yet another Firefox release is the fact that Mozilla is now...

Can anyone help? A few days ago, Firefox began loading some pages very slowly or not at all. I've cleared the cache, made adjustments to about:config, uninstalled, and reinstalled and I still can't fix this. This occurred prior to the 13.0 upgrade. Installing the upgrade didn't work either. I've switched to Google Chrome for the time being. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide. :)

Just got the update to FF 13. The first things I noticed was when I hit the new tab, it had updated sample pages of a bunch of my previously visited pages. You can click on one, or do your normal url thing. Very cool. The next thing I noticed was when I got on Free Republic. I use the mouse wheel to scroll down, and it seems a lot smoother. There is a flicker, but the smoothness is worth a little flicker. Maybe, the scrolling thing is just my imagination. I need to go get some sleep. :-)

The biggest lawsuit in Microsoft’s history dominated the 90s, when the company battled accusations that it was stifling browser competition. Rival Netscape couldn't survive, but the Windows giant was ultimately forced to strip Internet Explorer from its operating system in a landmark ruling. That conflict may be brewing up again. Mozilla, the developer group behind the popular Firefox browser, argued Wednesday night that Firefox is being banned from certain versions of Windows 8, the forthcoming tablet-centric OS from Microsoft -- returning Windows users to the dark ages before competition. “The upcoming release of Windows … and Microsoft’s browser practices regarding...

t’s not every day that you start a business and quickly decide to say “no” to 70 percent of your potential customers. In retrospect, this turned out to be 4ormat’s secret weapon. At 4ormat, our goal is to provide an easy way for creative professionals to create and manage an online portfolio website. Although the portfolio itself looks great in all browsers, to this day, the portfolio building interface does not support Internet Explorer. And we don’t just mean IE6 or even IE7. We mean every version of Internet Explorer.
